 The Agony of Defeat...
I have been watching the Olympics off and on. Who has enough time to just sit down and watch it for hours?? Not me.
While watching I have noticed, not so much the winners but the person who gets second or third or worse yet, fourth, finishing just out of medal range..In women's track for instance..the pain was palpable for some of these women. Women who were supposed to win..and fell short. The agony of training for hours and hours, days and days, months and months...well you get it.

The gymnast from China who fell during the floor excercise, favored to win..did not even get a medal. Her family had been given a home when she made the team..wonder what happens with that?? Yikes..the pressure and the agony she felt was horrible. She cried..and that broke my heart. The American gymnast who got the same score as the Chinese gymnast and the Chinese gymnast took home the gold..hmm what was up with that??

That has to be the worst feeling in the world. Yeah you got to go and represent your country..but once there..you blew it.Yikes!! Maybe I am too sensitive..and someone has to be the first loser and second and third and so forth..

I stayed up until 11 hoping to catch one BMX race..to no avail. I don't know what time they came on..but I hear Team USA faired well. It comes on prime time tonight. If you see any of it..that is the sport my son competes in. We have enjoyed dinner with Kyle Bennett several times while at some of the National events. Go Team USA!!!!

Shemelts, I guess it is their SHEER EMOTION and AMAZING PASSION they have for their chosen sport. It is what they've worked for over the past 4 years, maybe even their whole life.

But of course to us, Gold, Silver, Bronze or Last, they are still the Olympic Athletes, who are the elite of the elite. And that aint a bad title to take home.

xx

It's amazing how just one moment in time can alter an outcome. A lifetime of training to get to a BIG moment and something as mundane as a stumble or a pulled muscle happens and it's all gone in a heartbeat. Maybe we should celebrate ALL of them, and not just the ones wearing the medals. Hmmm...not a bad philosophy for life in general...

Hi shemelts, Just stopped by your blog to see if you had been watching the olympic bmx racing. I saw a few time trials and all of the mens quarter finals today - awesome racing. The coverage was great - really good footage - not sure if everyone around the world sees the same footage? Day 2 of bmx will be extra special because we get to see the ladies race too! I feel sorry for those men that didn't make it past the quarters today... I know what you mean in seeing the agony on the faces of those that don't get a placing - I always notice that too. I think sport at this level is about having nerves of steel... I hope those who don't place are able to keep everything in perspective. A father of an ozzie silver medalist who got interviewed today said he would have been proud of his daughter if she had placed last because making it to the olympics is an achievement in itself. I hope those who miss out on finals and medals etc will see it that way too when the dust has settled.

Yes your right! It must be just a let down!!!
At the same time I was watching the womens balance beam last night. The little Shawn Johnson taking the gold. The parents so nervous but yet the girls concentration seemed unshakeable! When she took the gold the parents hugged in that long embrace. The look of pure proudness from herself and her parents was moving!
I think I saw a tear as they played the National Anthem and the girl looked like she was so honored!
Like you said the time, work and money poured into each athlete is amazing. Metal or not they all made it to compete! There is something really wonderful in that alone!!! It's got to be wonderful to watch it pay off and sooo hard to watch it all slip away. I too wonder what they did about the house thing. I didn't know they had done that!?!?

I was wondering about that... the US gymnast that tied with the China gymnast but China got the gold. I am still unclear why.
I agree with you on this.

Easy..yep you are right..

BL..life is like that..one moment changes things dramatically

CD..I taped the first race..or so I thought..turns out the dvd ran out right as it started. I was so disappointed that the rain caused a delay. Our rider Kyle Bennett separated his shoulder and maybe that extra day will help him. Thanks for stopping by. :)

anotherdaze..yep..I would be so proud..all that dedication.Parents play a big role.

KarKar..who knows how they came up with that shizzle. China did a lot of that in gymnastics. Hmmm.
