I know a lot of people are all up in arms about the swine flu vaccine and the government's role in dispensing it. I know that we don't want the government making choices about who gets what and when. I get that we all want to be in control, especially when it comes to our children. I don't have any answers on what is the best way to go, vaccinate or not vaccinate. I do know that they are recommending that you vaccinate your small children, and I am thinking it might be the best course of action.
We have had 60 pediatric deaths in the United States, 11 in the last week of September, that were swine flu related (this does not include October deaths). We had one yesterday in Cumberland County, Tennessee, a four year old boy. We lost a 5 year old boy in Nashville, last month and a 6 year old boy in Ga. How many children are we going to lose to this pandemic? You know the thing that bothers me is that parents think that their healthy child will be okay, that it is mostly the children with chronic illness who are dying. Well the truth is several children who were healthy, with absolutely no health issues have died. Children who have compromised immune systems, asthma and of course any chronic illness are even more at risk.
Today they released the swine flu shots in our community. They are vaccinating the medical field, then small children and infants, and pregnant women. I can't tell you which way to go, but if I had a small child, I'd be leaning towards vaccinations. Pay attention to the CDC, they don't get alarmed easily. If they think this is going to get really serious, likely as not, it will.
In closing I want to say, I don't know any child who has died from the swine flu. However, my heart hurts every single time I read that a child has died. They are not my children, but they are somebodies child. Somebodies hopes and dreams, namesakes and futures, and they are gone in a flash. I want to say a silent prayer for everyone of these families, and for all the families yet to come who will be affected by this pandemic.
