The Horserace that stops a Nation
On the 1st Tuesday in November every year from about 2.45 pm onward most Australian adults down tools, leave there workstations and watch a horse race that stops a Nation.  The "Melbourne Cup" was run today and where I work was no exception.

By 3 pm I was sitting comfortably in front of a big screen as  horses lined up for the biggest race in the Spring racing calendar.  Beside me was a plate of prawns (shrimp for the uninitiated), Pacific Rock oysters and strawberries, and in my hand was a glass of champagne.  The bets had been placed, the sweep drawn now all that was left to watch the horse race.

The office was silent except for the race callers voice, no phones intruded no traffic noise from the street, for this race really stops the Nation. After the race I walked to the window to gaze out on the parking area of the complex where I work to discover that the only cars still parked there were staff members here where I work every other business had closed early.

ONLY IN AUSTRALIA could such a thing happen, where people who normally would not watch, let alone bet on a horse race, stop, bet and enjoy the excitement of it all.

My goodness, I had forgotten it was on - not that I would have seen it, cause I was fast asleep, but I'll look forward to watching the result on television later.

E, It was an Australian horse that one, but I will not spoil it and give it away.

I just want to know if you won anything, or didn't you bet.

Skip I don't bet, basically because I have no idea whether or not a horse is a goer or a nag and making someone else rich because I have no idea doesn't appeal at all to me

That would be a great day. Here that never happens. Good ole American, we don't let anything get in the way of work. YUCK!!!

BJ, it's a one off day per year and it has been a tradition here for a very long time, most people get into it and have lots of fun and it's a rather different way to spend a couple of working hours, usually nothing gets in the way of a working day. (other than answering comments on thoughts);-)

How lovely! I have some fond memories at the races myself, only these races did not stop a nation. They rocked my world though! Thanks for sharing a taste of Australia with us. How cool.

V, I have this feeling that there is not a lot of other places in the world where a horse race could attract so much attention. Very indicitive of Australia.

Stopping for horse races and playing two up (only on ANZAC day) are very very Australian things, got a bit to do with the fact that as a nation we don't take ourselves too seriously. It can be fun living here.

love it! Thanks for sharing, I had no idea that there was such a tradition for Australia ... wish we had something like that ... way too serious here!

MM, there would be a nationwide strike if we were told no Melbourne cup this year, although it almost happened last year with the horse flu thing. As a Nation most Australians are not too serious, most of us are quite easy going.

In Victoria (the state where the Cup is run) they have a full day public holiday, we just get a few hours off from our usual duties to have a bit of fun.
