 the words "I love you"

I am curious as to what different people take this to mean here is my own definition please comment with yours.

The words "I love you" mean so much. First off it means that you want the person your telling that to, to be happy, even above yourself. It means that when your around them you somehow feel like everything is going to be ok, even if you don't always know what to do, which you won't. Welcome to human existence. It means that they are worth whatever pain in the ass that you go through on their behalf, and it means you want them to live the most fulfilling meaningful life that they can. It also means that you want to be their the whole way.
Now, when they say I love you in return, that opens even more meanings, as now that you have acknowledged such and that it is mutual these words become a promise. A pledge to each other that states, you want to be with the other, and a promise, to try to be happy. If they love you, that is what they want... they want your happiness, and if you love them, you want theres. The thing is though that we have such very little control over the other person, and love is most certainly not controlling. We want them to be happy, and yet we don't always know what to do, or sometimes we forget and stumble. Love forgives, it has to in order to survive. We don't always understand it but when we love someone we love them.

EDIT: In light of what has been said I realize that I did not ask my question clearly enough, I'm looking at more the relationship love. It is because its hard to say without meaning it that this type of "I love you" fascinates me.

Love... So complex yet so simple. The love you spoke of above feel like the type of love you would feel in a relationship, but love takes more forms than water does. I mean you have steam, you have water and you have ice. It is all H2O but in different forms. Do I love my dog the same way I love my mother? Yes, and no... Love is different, but the same all at once. The love a mother feels as she lockes up her son or daughter and sends them off to a re-hab is still love, and in some ways is a controlling love. It is the same love that one feels for their hown town when they first come home after a long time away. And yes we can love things that are not alive... but who is to say a town is not alive lol. Love is as deep and vast a feeling as the outer space is with its stars and planets and different solar systems. In relation ships we oftne hear that, " IF you loved me you could have never done that to me." Can we feel selfishness and love at the same time? the love one person feels might not be the same as the love their partner feels. Trying to explain love would be like trying to explain air, sure you can break air down and get all scientifik and break out you table of elements. But there is no table of elements for love. There is not real way to measure love. I was once told that love is like a pile of dog poo in someones yard... once you step in it, no matter how many times you clean your shoe, you just cant get rid of the smell. Do i agree? sometimes, but it made me laugh non the less. Have a great night!

Hey, I agree love is unselfish. Love comes in many diff forms but yet it is the same thing. I love my son dearly, and the love I would have for a spouse is different yet similar in the fact that I want the best for them and care about them deeply. As the comment above, love is complex yet so simple.
Sadly, we all tend to sometimes throw the word love around..and not mean it. But when the love is genuine, my goodness it is purely beautiful.

You complete one a another make one another hole your not hole until you find that special some one that why there called a special someone and believe me there some out out there for every one.
Love is a tricky subject really and almost impossible to explain. The love you feel for family or spouse or boyfriend in a way is the same and yet differ, you want your family or you lover to be happy and have respect for them RESPECT is to me part of love, but heres were it differs when you like the opposite sex a lot of it hormones but in the end it goes further than just emotion it comes from heart and soul but rather we know it or not we pick up on the others signals that they are producing form partly hormones which is our boots, then attraction eyes body need I say more? Personality, what pleasant to us kindness or the bad boys feeling you want to cherish and protect or in the ladies terms some one who well be there with us after we’ve moved out knowing no matter what you can turn to them trust honesty, two last words two for family but family like you love them but there blood and that like in way friends are friends and they dint make your heart melt and some day you will want to strike out but lover if real love you want to be there because a different physical attraction you share, like you heart telling you some thing follow your heart it will tell you that some one to share the good and bads who feeling of wanting to be with /around them and Never regretting being with them
