My oldest son is now eligble join Cub Scouts. It has been many years since my own days in scouting and about all I remember of it now is that it was fun. The local pack held an information meeting for the parents of first grade boys of my sons' school that were at least somewhat interested in signing up. I was very surprised to see at least 18 boys being represented at this meeting by mostly their mothers but some father and some couples. The cub master(?) gave a brief overview of what Tiger Cubs is and what kind of commitement they were looking for from the boys and the parents. I had never heard of Tiger Cubs before, when I was a Cub Scout there were Wolfs and Bears but no Tigers. Apparently this is something new for the youngest boys and a parent/partner to get started with scouting.
Adding 18 new first grade boys to the pack means creating some new dens. The cub master was recommending that the boys be split into three groups which was an idea that the moms had to come to terms with. My impression was that they wanted this to be one or maybe two groups as the boys pretty much all know each other as they are all in first grade at the same school. The conversation quickly turned into one of scheduling den meetings which basically put everyone into one of two camps; those who wanted day time mom led den meetings and those who wanted Friday evening dad led den meetings. At this point I got to having a sidebar discussion with one of the other dads and we both volunteered to be co-den leaders. Other people were willing to help too but nobody wanted to be "the" den leader. I have never done anything like this before but I really wanted my son to join the cub scouts and I was willing to give it a try.
