 The season for Greed?
Yes, its the 1st of December again. Only 23 shopping days left. You all better get your skates on then! Is it just me or does Christmas now seem  like everybody's birthday has fell on the same day, all at once?

Masses of people hurry round the stores buying presents, cards, wrapping paper, trees and decorations. Maybe the trees and decorations are the only way we can tell it apart from any other celebration. Well, that and the fact that almost everything is in shades of red and green.

Its that time of year again when strange people appear out of nowhere with bells in their hands, weird looking men with red padded suits and cotton wool beards appear and we tell our kids that these guys are okay and not like the "other strangers' we have been warning them about the rest of the year. When they ask why they are dressed like that, we tell them it's Christmas and that's Sanat Claus. "But you said he isnt real....", comes the reply. Don't you just love the festive season!? :p

It's a madness, a sickness, an addiction to some and we're all just supposed to accept it, jump on board and dont be a "Grinch", (It used to be a Scrooge but times change). If you dare say that you don't celebrate it, the mad people look at you askance as if you just declared you saw Elvis in Walmart.

Lots and lots of people get themselves into hundreds (even thousands) of debt in the well meaning, but msiguided idea that they are doing their best for the kids by giving them everything they don't really need and probably won't appreciate fully, but they "want" it, so that is justification enough, it seems.

We put up tacky tinsel, tawdry trees and the inevitable "one bulb out" lights, then we take them all down again later and wonder why the house looks bare. We eat until we can eat no more, have time off work to 'celebrate' when we actually watch old re-runs on the TV and sleep or bitch amongst the family.

Despite appearances though, I'm NOT a grinch, (Or a scrooge for that matter). I actually DO love Christmas. I love the decorations, the carol singing, the magic and the Spirit of the season. And that's where my problem lies you see!

Amongst that mad crowd of demon shoppers, amidst that throbbing mass of stressed-out, peed-off humanity, I have searched and searched. I have been up and down numerous streets, in and out of countless stores and STILL, I can't find the magic or the Spirit of Christmas on sale anywhere.

In the mad dash to buy that latest "whatever", to use up the remaining credit on that  last card and to get that 'must-have' thing, it seems that the REAL reason for Christmas has been lost among the packed aisles of stores. The magic has been buried and trampled underfoot beneath the greed and profit of Commercialism.

Bah humbug!?

How about this Christmas, we each make a promis to ourselves, no one else that the magic, the spirit, the reason for the season will be uppermost and the need for greed can take a backseat for a change?

Whatever you decide on, may you all have a great time anyway. Seasons greetings to every last one of you. :)

Good point hun. So many people lose sight of the real spirit of Christmas.

Christmas was ruined for me in about 1998 when Celine Dion released a christmas album and it got played over and over and over again at the grocery store where I worked. It makes me shudder just thinking about it!!!

I hate that tinned, piped muzak kaos - and I'm just a customer, so I can leave again anytime. I know how you must have felt.
