We' ve recently had Rememberance day/ Veterans day and we're coming up to Thanskgiving in the US so in this blog, I'm remembering and giving thanks to some very special Spirits who have shared their lives with me - Our pets!
Rather than list the pets I and my family have had over the years though, I decided to make this a little more controversial and remember, give thanks for, and pay homage to those 'unsung heroes' of the animal world. Anyone who really knows me would tell you that I am a BIG animal lover, sometimes to the extent of perhaps placing them at least on a par with, if not before, people. I don't believe in the 'dumb animal' idea and, in many cases, would suggest that some humans are dumber.
So let's start with Animal experimentation. I abhor the arguement for or against animal experimentation and believe that this is just one face of the 'evil' side of science. It simply should not happen as many animals have a different constitution to humans. For example, the common rat can endure approximately 25% (I think) higher doses of Strychnine and 75% higer doses of Arsenic than humans. A minute dose of either would paralyse a human or bring about their instantaneous death, depending on the amount given. It is a fallacy then to suggest that it is 'necessary' to experiment on animals to test drugs before allowing humans to get them. I have one word for anyone who disagrees with that view - Thalidomide!
Then there are those poor animals who become, in one way or another, the victims of small minded dumb humans. Those pets who are abandoned, tossed out of the family home, cruelly treated at the hands of some drunk or anger-filled person and, especially, those pets who are 'snatched' to be used in illegal dog fighting.
Incidentally, those who bay for the blood of dogs should not be locked up in prison at the taxpayers expense. Since they enjoy the 'sport' so much it would be far easier to paint them with the blood of slaughtrred cattle at an abbatoir and then let them be the 'fox' in the Fox hunt. If the hounds don''t get them first, then they can be jailed. It may suprise some of you who have seen my other more spiritual writings to see me suggest such a thing, but I believe that experiencing the extreme pain, shock, horror and terror they inflict on animals WOULD be a poignant Spiritual lesson for such people.
Those who abandon and/ or are cruel to animals in other ways, it would be easy in these times to 'chip' them so that they never have the ability to have unsupervised access to animals ever again.
These may sound extreme measures but this is one area which I feel very strongly about. Animals may have claws and teeth but domestic pets rarely use them against humans, (unless in over-excited play), whom they have come to trust and depend on. What a horrible betrayal to have someone you trust treat you badly, beat you, starve you, throw you outside or tie you up somewhere and leave you there.
If this happened to a human, the full force of international law would be brought to bear against the perpetrator. Why should it be any different for an animal, who cannot even speak on its own defence?
For those who may think that they are just dumb animals and that while cruelty is wrong, these views are too extreme, remember - every single animal has a Spirit, a Soul within its physical body, just like you. Every single animal was created and born into this world for a reason, just like you. Every single animal will go back to "God", just like you. I wonder what tales they will have to tell?
Wasn't it "God" who said that, "What ye do unto the least of these, ye do unto me!?"
Yet, I'm not here to preach to anyone, least of all to those who already believe. The point of this post is simply to make a call to all you who are animal lovers, who have your loving, adoring pets with you today - to ask you all to spare a thought, a prayer, a wish for those animals who are suffering, who are lost, abandoned, stolen, shivering with fear and confusion in animal shelters, for those who have given years of loyal companionship perhaps and whose time here is nearing its end - they deserve our love, care and
friendship too.
They have earned the right to be Remembered, and they deserve our Thanks.
Namaste

We have been put into the role as the protectors of animals and we should all take that responsibility. Good post Jim.

Getting the message about responsibilities out is a challenge itself these days Paul. Thanks for the comment.

I care for animals a great deal too honeysuckle. How could you not when you look into their deep, trusting eyes?
TY for the comment

Good post Jim,
But let's also remember the poor pet owers who are abused by their pets. My cat, Perfect, whose name I need to change to Sling blade but the neighbors disaprove of the change, needs to go to - I don't know - sensitivity training.
Don't get me wrong I love my cat and I know he's just got some issues he needs to get resolved but I'm growing a little impatient with his progress.

Good post Jim,
My cat would love it and if he could read (and sometimes I think he can) he would throw it up to me constantly.
