| Healthy, wealthy and wise? I wish!!

I've worked in Health care for more time than I care to remember and, during that time, I have amassed a wealth of experience which has given me a more widespread foundation than some who have been in the industry longer. I even ventured out into the field of "Complementary and Alternative therapies". If you name a client group or 'type' of person, I have probably been involved at some point, in some way, in their health care and advice. It's obvious that I have seen and done a lot but I would never get to the stage of thinking that I "knew it all". Rather, I know that I am always learning and in fact, may be even learning some things that I learned before and have since forgotten. My experience has been within the UK thus far, although I'm sure that the actual nuts n bolts of it are not that different in the USA, especially for those who practice.
One thing I always detest is the approach that some 'professionals' have towards some patients. We are supposed to be well past the seeing a pateint as a symptom rather than a person thing but still it goes on. Also the amount of times I have heard nurses talking about "their" ward and that such and such a thing is 'not allowed' on their ward simply because they dont want it, not because it has any bearing on health care. Of course, 'their ward' belongs to everyone, it is part of the hospital, paid for by taxpayers money and they are only there in charge of it, for a while. One sister of a ward I was in did not 'allow' any patients to have television access. Why? I still can't tell you to this day but she was allowed to do it. Anyone with a modicum of sense will tell you that television is a good thing as it helps to distract patients minds and, perferably, make them laugh at some comedy and, as they say, "laughter is the best medicine".
Another peeve was the appraoch that 'status came before patients'. For those not in the know, what I mean by this is that many nurses nowadays seem to think that removing and cleaning bedpans and commodes from a patients bedisde is 'beneath' them. I have even heard some voice the opinion that they did not 'do all that training just to wipe bums'. Don't think that such individuals are few and far between because there are more out there than there should be.
It has long been the 'cry' from professionals that it must never be 'profit before patients' yet that is exactly what is happening within the UK NHS structure as the powers that be try to bring in private health care by the back door, in similarities to the American structure. If health care is allowed to denigrate as it is doing at the moment then there will probably be a return to the 'poor hospital' scenario. If you live in the Uk and you havent done so already, it might be wise to start looking at private health insurance now.
One of the clients groups I enjoyed working with the most was the Elderly. Here are people who have a whole life story and most are glad to have someone who is actually willing to listen to it. They are our real forgotten generations, as they are left behind, deemed to be 'not contributing' to society and so are not high on anyones list. In some hospitals they are even referred to as 'bed-blockers'! Imagine that. Ever since I first heard that expression, my retirement plan is to be a grumpy, complaining bed-blocker who will make them earn their keep and give them a run for their money!!
Seriously though, health is something that is written about, it is big business and earns millions of dollars every year. there are books, diets and all sorts of things connected to it and it shouldn't be taken lightly but there are some who are guilty of 'terrorising' through misinformation.
My message is - dont worry about your health, just enjoy life. Eat, drink and be merry as has been said. If you have any problems then dont call me. This is my blog and "this" is my disclaimer!! lol
Have a happy, healthy holiday, (and a great life all)! |

Yes the healthcare system is screwed up, especially in America, but you're right. Since life is short, spend time enjoying it, not worrying about what you're eating or drinking.

I have worked in healthcare a big portion of my life as well.
I know exactly what you mean.
So many have power trips on the brain, and forget that they are supposed to be there to ease the discomfort of the sick.
Good awareness entry.
I will eat, drink, and be merry.
Peace.
