Calling All Miami Dolphin Fans
Calling All Miami Dolphin Fans

At last, week one is upon us and the uncertainty of what the 2007 NFL season may have in store for our beloved dolphins can begin to be answered. The thought that in the beginning of September our dolphins could once again be a team possibly bound for the playoffs, had by the end of the same month turned to, it’s alright, we can still salvage and eight and eight record. How quickly, and cruelly all hope was dashed, one loss turned to two, then to four, six, eight, ten, twelve, fourteen, how can this be?

Who can I blame? The owner, the coach, the players, injured, healthy or traded doesn’t matter. One thing was for sure it had to be someone’s fault. Or maybe it the fans fault, had we become so used to losing, that the passionate support of our turquoise and orange, had faded to such a degree that the football gods knew it and this was our punishment? Were we secretly wearing someone else’s colors on game day, causing even more damage? What’s happening to us, how can this be?

Then the voices started, you know the ones, what is Green doing, put in Lemon, I can’t believe Green’s hurt Lemon is terrible put in Beck. It’s going to be alright the defense can get us through this, I can’t believe the front office has let the defense get this old and done nothing about it. I hope the never let Ricky come back, thank god Ricky’s back, oh for god’s sake if they hadn’t brought Ricky back so quick he wouldn’t have gotten hurt. Why did we waste a first round draft pick on Ginn Jr.? He has a bad toe. Where’s Chambers, Welker, why won’t Marino come back and save us?

All the while, as if things weren’t bad enough, the unthinkable was happening, no not the thought of going 0 and 16, something far worse, a team having the nerve to steal away our most prized possession, the perfect season, a record which was not supposed to be challenged, ever. To make things even worse it was our teams arch enemy, the New England Patriots. The perennial loser, turned dynasty had set their sites on stealing our legacy. Wasn’t it bad enough we had to sit and watch them win game after game, super bowl after super bowl, all while suffering the pointing and name calling at our own inability to perform. Every dolphin loss an open wound growing bigger week after week, loss after loss, and every patriot win salt spilling into the wound. How can this be?

No more suffering, this can’t really be happening 0-16 and 19-0 in the same season, it can’t be, it’s not fair, if there were football gods they wouldn’t allow this. So as the weeks passed on the losses and wins mount the once unthinkable is actually going to become a reality. Ok, the day we have been waiting for is here, us against them, we can kill two birds with one stone, we get our victory and we stomp out any thoughts those patriots have of stealing our history. The stars are aligned, we did it to the bears in 85, the dolphin greats from the 72 team are on TV doing interviews, all us loyal fans have decided that this one victory will make our season a success, we can’t lose. We say a little prayer to the football gods, it goes something like this. “Please football gods let the dolphins beat the patriots.” We lost, how can this be?

It’s over we are going to lose all of our games and they are going to win the super bowl again, only this time they will be 19 and 0. I’m done I not watching the rest of the season, I hate football, Cameron sucks, Huizenga doesn’t care, and why won’t Marino come out of retirement and save us?

Thank you Ravens. We won how can that be?

We won a game, it’s finally over, I haven’t come that close to crying since old yeller died. Who cares about the stupid Patriots let them win the super bowl, besides the best they can do is tie the 72 dolphins, they can never beat them. Suddenly it starts to happen, the patriots go undefeated in the regular season and they start smack talking, saying things like “16 and 0 best regular season record ever.” Slowly the resentment begins to grow from fans throughout the league, not just the dolphin fans. They win their first playoff game and the level of resentment goes up a little more, things like “Our team is 17 and 0 that ties what the dolphins did”, can be overheard at the water cooler. Then they win their second playoff game and you hear, “Were 18 and 0 that is better than the dolphins”, and fans throughout the NFL have heard enough and collectively they begin to pray to the football gods, and the prayer goes something like this, “Please football gods, let the giants (some will say G men) beat the patriots.

This prayer goes on for nearly two weeks while football fans around the world wait for the big day to come. All the while all the talk is about perfection, making history, how will it feel when it happens, blah blah blah. Finally, game day, hours of pre-game coverage, three million dollar commercials, huge halftime show, every conceivable bet you can make, friends, family gatherings, food, alcohol, you name it this day has it all, it should be a national holiday it’s so big.

It’s us against them, and for nearly three and a half hours we sit, neither side making a sound, except for the occasional comment on the quality of the commercial, then with 59 seconds left, our collective prayers begin to be answered, we just don’t know it yet. Millions of fans around the world, most of whom, on any given Sunday wouldn’t root for the giants if you paid them to have just subconsciously crossed their fingers and toes as one. Meanwhile the patriot fans still swollen with the arrogance of their 18 and 0 record, Brady at quarterback, 59 seconds on the clock, Welker and Moss at wide receiver, and a been there done that attitude, take the field to make history.

If you ask me 18 and 1 is a fantastic year no matter how you slice it. I think this year however I will keep my 1 and 15 record and wear it proudly knowing that when the football fans around the world talk about the 07 NFL season they aren’t going to be talking about Miami Dolphins they are going to be talking about that other team.

To all my dolphin friends around the world I raise my glass and make a toast, “Here’s to the only undefeated team in league history, and thank you football gods for answering our prayers, we appreciate it more than you know.”
Now that champagne tastes pretty damn good even if it is a little more aged than I like it, wouldn’t you agree?

I love this game and my team and can’t wait for next year.

GO FINS!!!!!!!

Good luck to the Fins next season, from a big-time Pats fan! I think the influence of Dan Henning, Bill Parcells, and former UCLA head coach Karl Dorrell will really help your Dolphins in 2008-09. I like what Tony Sparano said the other day: "What we didn't want to hire is guys who are just 'yes men' that shake their head 'yes' in the room. We wanted to bring idea people into the room. We have idea people. I feel like our staff is full of knowledge right now to be able to help these players."
