So we left San Jose and jumped on a bus to Bataan, and were met there by a guy from wales! Bataan is a little almost frontier town next to the canals which form islands with the sea on the other side. The project was on one of these such islands. So it was half an hour in a taxi witha couple form the states who had been beofre and a surfer from canada who were also volunteering. The road had corrugations to rival even the worst we found in northern Australia but was beautiful with banana plantations on either side. However we are not in banana season so no bananas but lots of fresh mangos and pineapples and papayas. We then got to a small dock and jumped ina boat to go the rest of the way. This part was especially amaing due to rainforest on either side of the boat, so close you could touch it, if you were sure it wouldnt sting bite or other wise hurt you! We saaw white faced cappuchen monkeys, heard howler monkeys and saw so many types of bird it was difficult to keep up. After stoppin goff to give the neighbours their shopping from bataan * its the only place to get essentials near by and so the project helps them out a bit* we arrived at La Tortuga Feliz, with beautiful canals on one side and then the carribean ocean on the other! SO much like pardise. We meet al the volunteers about 18 others and then get settled in to our cabinas which each hold six so arent too bad. Then we go off for an introductory talk about beach patrols. The project basically runs these to look for turtles and collect the eggs to put in the hatchery beofre the poachers do. At the moment its Baula (leatherback) season and these are the biggest so im told, cant wait. Only one problem though all the guides (locals who are trained with turtles) speak Spanish and Vicky Pollard style spanish at that so it makes understanding anything very difficult but its a challenge. In the end i took the spanish lessons that Robert ( the guy from wales) runs in his school just up the beach. but alas my time in the interent cafe has run out so i shall leave you now but will return soon with more updates!
