Preface
This blog was originally written in December 2005, hence why it is quite short compared to blogs I have written more recently.
I was on the computer after doing a lot of RE revision for these beloved exams, looking at a Royal Navy website hoping to find a Referee Proforma which the Navy said they had enclosed in one of their letters but hadn't, when I decided to read my good friend Jonathan Eakin's latest blog entry.
With all respect to Jon, we are completely different in so many ways. I'm a Christian, and he's not. He's got long hair, and I've got short hair. He does politics, and I do RE. There are also many other ways we are different but I really cannot be bothered remembering them right now.
His entry was to do with Christmas and how it isn't really the season of goodwill, but should be. Now, being different I have failed to notice to such a degree the measure of "badwill" that Jon describes in his entry, but it noticable to some extent.
I'm not gonna sit here and type an entry against his, because he made some good points and I can't be bothered. What I am going to do is remind people of why they have a Christmas. It is true that Jesus was not born on 25th December, 1 AD; he was born some time in the middle of March in 3 BC or something like that. It is also true that the 25th December was originally a Pagan festival of worship to the Sun or something. By the way I apologise if I'm a bit vague or wrong about some of these points.
The early Christians changed December 25th into a Christian festival so they could have a holiday when there already was a holiday. It has traditionally become the anniversary of Jesus' birth. Most of the Western World have become "Christian countries" since then and Christmas (or X-Mas) has become tradition. In fairness, to say that the UK is a Christian country is stupid. Less than 10% of people attend Church regularly and although most people consider themselves to be nominal Christians, they really aren't Christians at all. The UK is really a Godless country.
Still we celebrate Christmas. As Jon said, it has just become a commercial holiday, much like Valentine's Day, which is really Saint Valentine's Day (another thing often forgotten).
Don't get me wrong, I love getting presents and a giant turkey dinner on Christmas Day, but I do get a tad annoyed when people manage not to acknowledge Christ at all during this holiday. Despite many peoples' beliefs, Jesus is the reason we have a Christmas. The giving of gifts came out of the Wise Men/ Kings giving Jesus Gold and those two other things that I can't spell.
I wonder how many people who read this actually sing "Happy Birthday" to Jesus on Christmas. I don't do it publically because my grandparents would think I'm being disrespectful, but I do it privately. Did you know that in Scotland now, it's illegal to have "Merry Christmas" up in public places, in case it incites religious anger!! They have to write "Merry X-Mas" instead. That pisses me off. You've somehow managed to leave out the most important part of the word. If they are worried about religious anger they may as well cancel the whole holiday. To be honest with you, I wouldn't give a rat's ass if Muslims put up "Happy Ramadam" on their houses. I'd be happy for them. Now I didn't mean to offend anybody with that last statement but I hope you can see what I'm saying with it.
All I'm saying is how would you feel if your whole family replaced your name with "X" on your birthday card?? or even forgot your birthday altogether?? Christmas is a Christian festival and because of that it seems reasonable that only Christians celebrate it. I do not celebrate Baisakhi. To be honest I don't really mind people who aren't Christians celebrating our holiday. God is the accepting God of everyone. I wouldn't even mind if people from completely different religions celebrated Christmas, just as long as everyone gives at least a bit of respect to Jesus. I don't care if you don't think he's God, but he is the reason for the holiday.
To conclude people, his name is Christ, not X.
