The above article is about girls who make a pledge entrusting their virginity with their fathers. The fathers promise to protect their daughters from illicit sexual encounters until the daughter is married. She gives her father a gold key, and in return he signs a document promising to protect her virginity. The idea altogether is almost ridiculous for a number of reasons--doesn't foster growth, it assumes that a woman will always be protected by a man- be it her father or her husband. Secondly, these purity balls objectifies women- it makes it seem that a womans only worth is her virginity, and therefore it should be so rigourously protected. But most importantly, it inhibits maturity- instead of her father "protecting" her why can't an 18 year old girl make these choices for herself?
