I went to high school in Lombard, Illinois, which is about 45 minutes west of Chicago. The suburb is a quiet community, with the usual mall, movie theater, small businesses, but its also close enough that I got a taste of the city growing up. My neighborhood is majority white, and my family is the only brown (South Asian) family on the block. Growing up, I rememeber going to "block parties" where the street would be blocked off and everyone would sit on lawn chairs together in the street. The men would barbecue, the women would sit around and talk, and the children would be playing in the field, playing games, or riding their bikes up and down the street. The people in my community were always very friendly and my dad was respected because he would give medical advice to some of our elder neighbors. After 9/11 we heard about some Asian families being treated differently, like outsiders, but we never experienced that. I enjoyed growing up in Lombard and sometimes I miss it, but now the city has so much to offer and i'm exploring it while i get to go to school here.

Hi..I graduated from Glenbard East HS in Lombard in 1971. Lived at 802 S. Grace. It is neat to find someone else from my home town. Left for college (Monmouth) after HS and then the Air Force. It seems like so long ago. Parents are both gone now. I wonder if it looks the same. Have not been back in 20 years.
