Today Mary Kate came with me to Rainbow House. We walked in and it was chaos. They were short on volunteers today so I am really glad that we went in because we were needed. Isabelle put me right to work at the table and there was a very long line already waiting for me. Mary Kate was told to "shadow" me but I don't think I did a very good job of showing her what to do because things were so rushed and hectic.
The tea kept running out and, and the water jugs kept needing to be refilled, and there wasn't enough change to give people back some money....the list goes on. However, instead of panicking I threw myself into the situation and did the best that I could. Of course I messed up..but how can I do more than my "best." One lady ordered two cups of tea. I poured her one and then had to make a new pot of tea before I gave it to her. When I brought the second one to her, she frowned at me and told me the first one had been cold. Then the lady sitting next to her, looked at me, and yelled, " I DON"T LIKE COLD TEA!" I just smiled, made her a new cup and continued on with my duties.
A new girl from Japan whose name sounds like "'me" + "you" + "key", (that's what she told me and Mary Kate to be able to remember her name) started volunteering for the first time today. She was very nice and Mary Kate and I could not figure out if she said that she had been in Oxford for 2 years on a Visa or if she was about to be here for 2 years.
Geraldine was not there today. It was the first time that I have been to Rainbow House and that she has not been there. When I asked Isabelle about her, she said that she would not be here for the whole month of April because she is having surgery. I was very sad to hear this because I want to be able to to say goodbye before we leave to go back to the states and I don't know if I will be able to.
