What's that expression? Oh yes. Hat tip to Open Europe for pointing out this article in "The Parliament" magazine...

A poster promoting debate on the issue of the location of the plenary sessions of the European Parliament was removed by security guards, No time is being given for debate on motions on the issue. Anti-Strasbourg MEPs are feeling discriminated against.
I know the official reason of course. It's not relevant for MEPs to debate location, because it is not for MEPs to decide where to meet - it's for Heads of State and Government in the European Council to decide the location of EU institutions.
In effect this means it is unlikely ever to change - having the European Parliament in Strasbourg a week every month or so keeps the hotels and restaurants there in business. Changing it would need a unanimous decision. But there's very little chance France would ever agree to letting Strasbourg go, economically it would suffer and politically - would any French President survive domesticaly if they gave up Strasbourg?
Oh and is symbolically important that there be an EU institution in Strasbourg because - as a town that frequently changed hands between France and Germany, having it "European" neatly summed up the reasons why the original six EU states agreed to pool their coal and steel resources and work together.
Some pro-Strasbourg people argue that the EP should be permanently in one seat - Strasbourg. I say it should be Brussels. EU politics is based on discussion and conciliation - make easier by being in one location. Having to fly everyone out to Strasbourg or back to Brussels (there's no easy Brussels-Strasbourg train journey) all the time to meet is wasteful and expensive. So one seat means Brussels. Sorry.
I've signed www.oneseat.eu, and joined the Facebook group. I'm one of over one and a quarter milliion Europeans to do so. A UK MEP has said she believes i is disrespectful to us not to allow discussion. It is also wasteful in terms of carbon emissions, time and cost to run the EP as a travelling circus. The Strasbourg EP building is delapidated and currently needs reroofing - why bother?
Finally - I'm pro-EU and still think this. You don't have to be anti-EU to find things that could be better!
