... my 3 month old son! I tried Baby Salsa today - I can't recommend it highly enough!
I put on quite a lot of weight living abroad and lost a good 16 kilos (just over 35lbs) before my wedding in 2006 - I'm somewhat annoyed to put it all back on in pregnancy
So, after a food-filled family christmas, I decided I really needed to do something about it. I'd looked at doing buggyfit (supervised exercise for mums that takes place round a park using your buggy for support and meaning you don't need a babysitter) but it's horrible outside in January and the cheery "be there come rain come shine" did not exactly thrill me.
I don't know an awful lot of mums - I'm the first of my friends to have a baby - so I've been doing the new mums' equivalent of internet dating. The website netmums has a "meet a mum local" section and I decided to post on there. I've met a few mums, all very nice indeed, some I intend to keep in touch with, others I've less in common with. It was one of my new friends via that site that recommended baby salsa.
The class is run by an instructor with her own baby. Babies are worn strapped to mums/dads/carers (but so far it's just mums) either ina papoose sort of thing or in a baby carrier (my Kipling frontcarrying one did the job just fine as Adam cannot yet support his own head). After a warm up we learned basic steps for salsa, chacha and merengue which then got put into routines to pretty decent latin music often double-time. Babies were given maracas to shake (Adam's too little so I had to shake it for him...) and we were off.
Boy do my hips ache now! Basically the class amounts to aerobics combined with weigh training all set to music. I can't stand the gym so I really hope this is going to be a good alternative.
The best thing is that with the babies you've automatically got something in common with the other participants - three of us went for coffee afterwards and I'm hoping that's going to be as much part of the whole experience as attending the classes. |

Great reading your entry. I too am a mum doing the mother and baby salsa classes and I love them too. they are the highlight of my week. I am fortunate that the classes are held in my area and I have made a number of friends through the classes.
I've never been a fan of exercising myself but doing these classes is just like working out without the pain.
I have tried two different sets of similar classes but i find one of them better setup and more professional. I just feel safer and enjoy it more. the classes go by the name of latino bambino (www.latinobambino.co.uk) and are held in various areas in London. which area do you go to for the classes? maybe we can meet after one of the classes.
Pauline and baby claire.
