small blog on the big C
We're all still a bit in shock. There's not a lot we can say, but you have to carry on, to find something you can do to show your love and support.
Last month my extremely healthy grandmother started getting a bit short of breath. No other symptoms... and she still doesn't.  But now we know that breathlessness is the big C. It's not lung cancer, it's bowel and liver and lung, and those are only the secondary ones.  The doctors don't yet know where the root cause of it is.  So there's tests and treatments and this is the new reality.

I've not seen her yet, not since she got the confirmation.  I'm going to in a couple of days.  She's in her eighties and although you know that every time you see someone that age it may be the last time, the cancer thing really brings it home. The cancer is pretty widespread and though she says she's going to fight it as hard as she can, it's unlikely she'll be physically able to make it to my son's christening next month. She's looking forward to my cousin's wedding booked for April 2010 - which I think is admirably positive.

When she started getting breathless it occured to my husband and me that it could be cancer and we started praying that, even if it's not God's will to make it not cancer, at least let her have as little pain as possible.  So far He's delivered.  And we can only say thank you for that.  Now we also need to pray for Grandpa and how he's coping too.

Everybody's got to die of something - and for 1 in 3 people in the UK it's cancer.  Grandma's the first of that side of my family to get it so we've an added element of fear of the unknown to deal with.  In the meantime though, we're going to make the most of the time we do have left together.  I just wish I knew what to say.

Just say "I love you" to your grand parents then do as you said and make the most of the time you have left together as time is the most precious but least in abundance these days. Blessings be with all of you.
