Hooray! Banana Republic is opening its first European store right here in London. I love that description - reminds us Brits that in the eyes of the rest of the world we're definitely part of Europe.
Even better, the company has chosen the domain .eu to host its UK store's website. Could have gone for .co.uk (and if I'd had to guess at the address rather than googling it that's what I would have gone for) but no, another clear indication of how this successful American company sees setting up in the UK i.e. a step into the European market.
So, for all the Brits who think we'd have a successful experience outside the European single market, that is to say outside the most successful regional bloc in the world, this serves as a useful reminder that the Channel is not wider than the Atlantic and that being an English speaking "in" is a good place to be... as Ireland already recognises.
Oh, and while I'm on the subject, does anyone really think that all the American investment banks choose to locate in London just to access the UK financial market? Of course not! (London is by default the Eurozone's financial centre and is the biggest centre in the world for trading Euros... ironic, eh?)
Think I'll celebrate by buying myself a tangerine coloured Banana Republic mac when the store opens on Thursday!
