| Our criminal justice system |
|
If you read my last post you know something of what happened to my step daughter 3 weeks ago. Long story short, her x-boyfriend attacked her with a hammer. He was arrested for battery, assault with a deadly weapon and false imprisonment. All felonies. I have spent this 3 weeks wading through the California criminal justice system. First was the police report at 2AM. That's OK, had to be done. I might add that the police were wonderful. They did their job efficiently and professionally. Next was the restraining order. One full day filling out papers and going from office to office to get an emergency RO. Then the waiting. No calls from anyone. Then by way of the Internet we find that he has already had his bail hearing. No chance to be there. Next we find he has had his pretrial hearing. Again, no notice, can't be there. All the while I am trying to get information from the DA's office. The person handling the case is never there and no one else can give me information. Yesterday, once again by Internet, we find that he pleaded guilty to lesser charges (misdemeanors) and has to serve only 60 days and 3 years probation. All this went on without us knowing anything. Today my step daughter received a subpoena to appear as a witness in the trial that has been canceled and she has never even been asked to tell her side of the story except in the polide report. To say the least I am totally frustrated, not to mention that I fear for my step daughter's safety when he gets out in about 5 weeks. I guess what I am trying to say is that the system sucks. It is so slanted in favor of the perpetrator that the victim doesn't stand a chance. At this point I don't know how to change the system, but I am certainly going to try.
