Texting my son in at night

My son is going into his junior year of college
and before he went away to school
he asked me
not to leave a message on his cell because he doesn't listen to them
if he sees my number on caller ID
he will return my call

(but it could take awhile)

and
he told me not to e mail him
because I clog it up,
and
he doesn't read them anyway
because according to him
they are too long

naturally
I wondered how we were going to communicate
and he replied

"bullet points"

so
I have been
"firing up"
text messages and aiming them in his direction
and to my amazement
it's working!

He answers a text message
instantly

its faster than a

speeding bullet point

of course
words are at a premium

yet

all my kids tell me they would rather text than talk
so I shouldn't take it personal

that's just how they feel in general
another story

so here is a little example
of a few typical  texts between my son and I
during the course of a day

He is selling cars this summer and living near his campus

mom
mornin
love u

son
u 2

mom
did u sell a car?

son
yea,
tell u about it later

mom
how much later,
will I still be alive?

son
yea

mom
congrats
love u

son
thanks
u 2

later that evening after not hearing from him about the big sale

mom
nite, love u

son
love u 2

I sort of feel like I'm tucking him in!
or should I say
texting him in?

Great post! Grown kids are still kids, I know. Mine still want to know I am right HERE, even when they are 'wherever'. Wife and I get a good scolding if we are off together too late and don't check in.

Texting is just so much easier- talking on the phone is less effective because if all i want to say is "please pick me up" i dont want to have to call, mostly because it takes like 20 minutes to reach you!

Nice story. While the text message may be better than nothing. Great relationships need more than text, they need the human touch. Hopefully you will be spending some time experiencing love with him, face 2 face.
Love U

I totally agree
I wrote a post a long time ago about how friendship needs time and eye contact
but
you have to make the best of everything and as far as my kids go
I will take what I can get

I would love to "see" them alot more
but, this is the next best thing

I just had to share this with you guys
I received this text last night from my son...

text from Son
If u want to spend some time with me Im driving 12 hours tomorrow to pick up a car is st Louis

from me
sounds like torture, i do not mean the glorious 12 hours I would get to spend with you, but having to turn down your very generous offer because of a stupid doctors appointment! Thanks for thinking of me. Maybe some other time. May I have a rain check?
I believe Max and Molly (the dogs) are free. I could check their calendar? Love MOM

from mom
Did you read my blog about texting u in at night?

from son
yea, I actually did haha well im bummed u cant go i could have filled u in on everything
can u reschedule or no?
-----------------------------

Boy, I have never felt that wanted by him in such a long time, I truly wish I could have gone. It would have reminded me of the old days when I picked him up from school. I loved those days...he was in a seat belt and couldnt get away, it was a wonderful bonding time...

I hope he asks me another time
