A year away from teaching. . .wow, what an opportunity that would be! If I had resources at my disposal to do so, I would travel. I've vacationed in a lot of places, but I think it would be an amazing thing to start in Hawaii and work my way across the United States spending 5-6 days in each states' capital. I would visit historical sites, museums, state governmental buildings and monuments and then end my journey in the nation's capital, Washington, DC. Each state has its unique attributes and it would be fun to develop my knowledge and understanding of them. Plus, imagine all the sky miles I'd rack up. :) It would give me some wonderful insite as a teacher when working with students on American History.

I want to congratulate you on this opus of a Q.O.D.
It is deep, deeper than you ever got us in before.
Your selfless ideas remind me of Mother Teresa,Winner of the nobel peace prize. Still worked with her own hands caring for the poorest of the poor.
What could I do? with a year, without consequences, all to myself?
It sounds scary, and exciting. Living for the moment is a radical concept.
I haven't given that much thought.
I would stop worrying. Just to rest my mind would be heaven. I would wear white cotton, and no shoes and live by the sea, and walk on the sand everyday. I would think about my life, and then I would paint it, in the style of , well, my style, but with sun and sea in watercolors and luminousity. On good paper, and not think of the cost. I would paint in the sun, and in the water, capturing the depth and clarity of eyes, and the irridescence of fingernails, and skin, it glows and has a million dazzling colors in it. And hair, each strand a different shade, and each one irridescent. That is what people are really made of. I could spend a year doing that. But I wouldn't, because I want to learn music, so In my cottage by the sea, I would have a guitar, and a fire, and a good teacher. Could I learn guitar well in a years time?
I would sit, and watch the firewood burn, and turn to ashes, it is calming and comforting. I don't know why.
In a years time, I could finish reading a lot of books I started, and didn't finish, so I am only half educated. I think I would stay there, and finish a lot of things I started.
And I would stop being afraid of the future. We are in God's hands,I need to remind myself. I will be okay, no matter what. I need to learn to trust in myself, too. With time and patience, and inspiration, I can do that.

I think if money and family were not an issue, I'd love to take some time to visit lots of people I've met here on Thoughts. I'd love to be there for ETS on the 4th of July.
Getting to some of them may be a problem because I don't want to ever fly again! So I guess I'd have to go by boat. That could take some serious time!
The people here in the US I'd see if I could go by train. I've never been on a train but it's something I've always wanted to do.
I've also always wanted to go to Venice and take a romantic ride in a gondola. I've been told they have this now in Las Vegas. I can't believe it would be anything close to the real Venice. I'd still like to see it as well.
I've been to Las Vegas twice. Half of what is there now wasn't when I went. Maybe another trip there as well.

Good question!
Let's see, I would start by taking a month up north in NYC. I would do all of the things I have wanted to do there like go to plays, run in central park and spend time with the ones that I love. Then I would travel the world. I would start with London and spend few weeks there seeing the city and the countryside. I would continue to Italy and spend time in Rome, Venice and near the coast. I would continue to Spain and spend some time in Sevilla and Madrid again but without a rush. I would try to meet people and learn about the culture. Next I would go back to the Czech Republic, Germany and Poland and see the sites from more mature eyes. I really enjoyed the people there and I would hope to learn some of their language so that I could communicate better. I would continue through Europe and see the Greek Isles and Ireland. I would expect this to take me about 6 months of my sabbatical. With 5 months to spare I would spend a few weeks in Australia before coming back to the US. For the last 4 months, I would rent a house on the beach on the gulf coast of Florida. Somewhere that was close to places for when I need company but far enough from the hustle of the city. I would read books, go on walks and people watch.
Posted by  prelude2it  on 2008-07-02 09:19:45

I would rent a cottage at the shore and write, write and write. When not writing, I would run, run and run. And when not doing either of the above, I would drink lots of wine, experiment with cooking and catch up on years of sleep.

I wish I could buy you that house from that movie - You've mentioned it a gazillion times. I guess you really loved it, huh?

Get in a car and drive the country
See everything, see it all, drive into Canada, see Alaska....cover the country one end to the other. And if I had time see other places in the world, and yes, even down under.
Posted by  whiteknight  on 2008-07-02 10:26:26

I would rent a beach house on Isla Mujeres. I would also get a little boat so I could sail around the little island. I would do nothing. I would read, I would paint, I would lay in a hammock in the afternoons. I would learn to cook with all the fresh ingredients the island has to offer. I would do some dives and snorkeling as well. And most importantly I would work on my tan! ;)

WHOAH! we've got a big one today! good question! :D

i would live life while sparing no extravagance. i'd travel all the places i ever wanted to. rent all the awesome cars and bikes. get myself a private jet and fill it with crap i could VERY much do without. go to the grandest hotels, most lavish restaurants. buy sophisticated clothes and those knee length overcoats that make you look like a COOL gentleman.

so here's some of the things that are definitely on the list -

IRELAND!! go there in my private jet. find the most awesome castle and have it restored just like it would have been ages ago. all the lighting would come from some sort of fire. candle chandeliers, fireplaces. the works. add all the modern comforts. like air conditioning and stuff. get lots of parchment and a quill. and get some horses. ride around on horses, practice archery (on UN-alive targets! :P), get a really cool sword made (something like ex-calibur), with gems inlaid in it. feast like the old kings. where everything was in excess! and you'd have plenty left over. get robes and stuff. you said no significant other. but there can be PEOPLE right? cause alone in a castle would suck! :P

ITALY - do rome again, cause its cool. but go out into the country side. small villages. and rent cottages every place i stay. get a really cool car. not the standard benz or bmw or even ferrari. get something REALLY EXOTIC. i dont even KNOW!! maybe shift em around. and eat the local food and learn how to cook it and stuff.

Germany - oooooh. stay at the most expensive hotel in frankfurt. and take day trips all over! see whatever there is to see. and drink enough beer to last me three lifetimes! do BEERFEST! that'd be awesome! need to have a bike in germany. maybe, again, shift the model every week or something.

Amsterdam! nuff said.

London - live the definition of CLASS. high society stuff. dressing like you own the world. dining with the queen and crap. manners and afternoon tea and all that junk!

Spain - no idea what i'd do. but do all the local stuff. food, drink, culture. stuff. EXPENSIVE!

Hit up france so it doesnt feel left out! :P

PRAGUE!!! god. architecture is awesome!! NEED to hit that place up! besides, the night scene is KILLER!!

mongolia - weird, i know. but gotta visit the birth place of the great khan! just pass through it. i dont think i'd have the balls to live like the mongolian tribes of that time!

japan - GAMING INDUSTRY! WOO HOO!

egypt. always wanted to do the whole pyramid thingie. want to go find myself a hidden pyramid and go treasure hunting in it!

greece. mythology. i'm crazy. need to do it.

do all the USA stuff. every major city. most expensive hotel. most expensive cars. most expensive everything! get a mansion at a beach somewhere. cool stuff.

mexica baby! i've heard its beautiful!
and why do u need potable water when alcohol is cheaper than packaged drinkin water anyway?

Jamaica - again, nuff said.

brazil - dont know why. need to do it.

ooh, almost forgot. SKANDINAVIA! all that region. vikings. really cool! i know they dont exist anymore! but still!!!

i think that covers all the places.

ooh and i wanna get into underground racing. the stuff like fast and the furious and all that. wherever in the world. just need to race some of those babies!

a year to myself, no responsibilities and money not being a factor....WOW. what would I give for that oppurtunity. My first stop would be one not too far from me and then I would travel the world. I'd start out in the states and visit every beach I could. I then would travel outside of the US and of course I too would stop to see Easy. I'd want to stay in extravagent hotels sometimes and live in nature others. I would just be, let the road take me wherever and just be.

I'd live on an island and raise a bunch of baby animals, any kind I could! :-)

What an awesome question, Roe, m'dear!

Let's see now...First, I'd load up on THE latest high-end camera gear (this is gonna be a photographic expedition), then I'd head for...oh, probably Hawaii (I've ALWAYS wanted to go there!).

After that, I would take my time and explore all sorts of countries of a non-North American locale. Mediterranean countries are high on the list.

I'd go safariing (<--is this a word??)in Africa, Egypt most definitely - I'm with Slash on the pyramid thing.

I would never set foot in snow the entire year I'd be gone. I'd also try to avoid major cities and stick to the countryside. Really snazzy little country inns, beach houses and such. Oh, and I'd need a local (studly) guide/translator in each country.

I'd chill on the world's most amazing non-crowded beaches for a day or two here and there if I grew too travel-weary.

Just me and my camera, a shite-load of moolah and a year?? Heaven!

I love reading your answers and if you are like me, you have already thought of a few more things you would like to add...to your fabulous year, so feel free!
I want to wear all white cotten and walk barefoot in the sand alot, just like circe! Diane Keaton always wears white and if Im staying in her pretend house, I should at least pretend Im going to wear WHITE and since money is no object then when my white garments turn yellow or pink like most of my good white stuff does, Ill just buy more and give the pink and yellow stuff to the good will, cuz I do not want to clutter that house!

Posted by  roe  on 2008-07-02 17:58:35

I would travel to the little cottage of my dreams...a 'kinkaid' sort of house..I'd like to get to 'know me' better and learn how to just love life with no crap...I would want to know how not to sweat the small stuff and do something about the big...There would be only one person I would want to see in that year....He know who he is!The fellow in my dreams....HIM!

Now, that I have been thinking about it,given the opportunity,I really would spend some time at the beach. Painting a series of sunlit, beachy, watercolors. And since this is fantasy, I wish mine half as good as Steve Hanks work, no, I want mine as good. www.steve-hanks.com. I would complete my year with a showing.
It would be a sell out,the proceeds would go to a cure for cancer. And my year's sabbatical would be for good.

roe, this is just a sidebar, but the other day, while shopping, I came across a clearance table that had THE most adorable little travel packages called "Belle Hop." Soft embossed passport folder, luggage tag, and these cute little matching padlocks...marked down at $1.97. Hey what girl can pass that up? I got it in blue, and figured I'd stick it under my bed until the opportunity for foreign travel presented itself. (it's leather, it'll still be around in twenty years, right?)

But since you've posed the question, I'll start the figurative packing and expend my two-dollar seedling.
hmmmmmm...
I think I'll be trailing behind Slash, he pretty much covered it all.

Most people in the UK take a 'gap year' between college and University, but since I am already 9 years older than most Uni students, I havent! However, if I had a year to myself, I would travel. So many places, so little time.
First off I would go to Croatia. In spite of the war that raged there it is a stunning country with beautiful countryside and amazing beaches. My dad and I were planning to go there before he died, he was in to walking holidays and the like.
I would love to go back over to Ireland - I have been to Northern Ireland a few times, and its gorgeous, especially on the Antrim coast in the very north around the Giants Causeway. But this trip I would go to the south too - Blarney Castle, Dublin, Kilkenny, Limerick, etc...
I'd love to go back to Turkey - one of the only countries I have ever been to where the sea is the colour it is in the brouchure - turquiose and so clear you can see to the bottom. A truly breath taking country steeped in history.
Then I would move onto the Chezk Republic, because my dad went there and loved it, so I know I would. I'd give France a miss (been there, wasnt so keen).
So then I would leave Europe behind. Travel to America. I have a 'thing' for New York, so I'd go there first. Sit in Central Park, pay my respects at Ground Zero, maybe drop by Jersey and say hi to Whiteknight. I'd then go up to Maine, find where Stephen King was born (maybe find Stephen King and shake that guy's hand - he's awesome!).
I'd love to go to Virginia, no idea why...and to Colorado, see if I can stay a couple of nights in the Overlook Hotel, lol. See some native American history.
I'd love to go to San Fransisco.
I never had any real desire for Asian, so I'd go to Africa. I have been to Morrocco, and Tunisia many times, but I'd also love to go to Egypt (say no more) and South Africa on a safari.
Then I would round my trip off by go to Australia, stay on Ramsey Street (KP and E2S will know what I'm talking about - what can I say? Childhood dreams of a Scott and Cheb wedding, lol), see the Great Barrier Reef, maybe pop down to Bali.
Then I'd head home and have a good tour of my own country, because it has its own hidden gems - the beaches of Cornwall are said to be beautiful, and catch the European weather, the Peak District of Derbyshire (my dad's home country and where he loved to walk), the Lake District of Cumbria, sea side towns of my youth like Great Yarmouth, Mablethorpe, Rhyl and Prestatyn in Wales, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow in Scotland.
Then I would take myself home to Newcastle, knowing so much more about me and what I want from life, and be all fresh and reknewed , ready for University. Since money was no object, I'd have a big 'welcome home' party and fly all my thoughts friends over to celebrate with me.
Wonderful question, my imagination is running wild.....

Hi. I have been lurking in the QOD for awhile but here is my answer. I have always wanted to travel throughout Texas and document all the historical markers in the state for a book. Drive all the backroads, visit all the small towns and take it all in. A good camera, some really good music, and a journal to mark the journey. Plus stopping at all the mom and pop restaurants to sample the best food in the world.

Oh I would definitely travel for the entire year. I would like Bootlady take my camera gear...... I would also write my memoirs.

BUT I would definitely visiting all of my friends on thoughts.com .. you think I'm joking don't you! Well I'm not.

I would be in Kentucky visiting Tony, and I believe Molly isn't far away, and neither is Angie (anotherdaze).
I would visit Geoff and his girls. I would definitely find SpiritualComa, Mamacita, and Doug.
I'd have to go to New York, so that would be Meredith! Blue you've got a spare room haven't you?? I think Prelude is near the beach, so a must stop... plus her restaurants sound like my cup-a-tea.
Canada would also be a must stop where Pixie and BootLady reside.
I'd track down Ellie and bring her back to the thoughts block with me. . . and I'd definitely find time for a cuppa with my Thoughts GF - Colorado.
Roe I'd have to visit you to see your adorable doggies!
Can't forget Lucky Luci, I'd need to try on her 6" heels.
Then Pita you'd be soon there after.

I'd definitely try to catch up with the newer friends like JBP and Noah .. oh and Hungry Heart and AllThingsBuck... Heather you'd be on my list.

KarKar, Slash .... want a visitor!?

Cheb, Dave and lil Stanley, I'd have to visit you guys in the UK... which would lead me to SouthernSun (Laura), Miss Marie and Tantric.

Mandie and LadieGodiva - you guys seem to know how to party ... wanna start one? Plus I wanna hold the snake!! :)

Of course I'd be spending a few weeks with my bff Kaz (Lastblastkl) and if I could catch her home, Dreampower.

If I've left your name off here, well it's because I can't fit my entire itinerary here.

But I'd cover USA, Canada and the UK .. AngelWings does that cover you??

Hmmm just wondering if I could get all this done in 1 year!
Oh and were expenses paid?? I hope so!

I have this book that has 100 of the worlds oldest and most beautiful castles. I would visit each one... but I would have to take someone with me.... Just not sure who it would be.

Ummmmm I have to take Princess with me....I can't even think about spending a year without her....anyways...I would go to Oz, I've always wanted to, I've always loved to culture there. I would explore every possible square inch and of course party with my girls E2S, KP, and kaybee!! Then I would go to Venice, I've always wanted to see it, my best friend went a couple of years ago and I was sooo jealous. Then I'd want to see the Netherlands in the height of tulip season, the pictures look amazing I could only imagine what it would be like in real life, then I'd cruise down the mediterranean...that's a must. The effiel tower, iceland, ireland, costa rica, jamacia, Cayman Islands, hawaii, alaska, vermont, Lord I could keep going

A year for myself. This isn't a good time for me to be alone, but for the sake of 'what if' lets do it. How about I start in Alaska, dredge, gold pan, bring my my two sons, my brother John, and Ben, B.I.L.and my buddy John, heck, a couple old timers, Jack, and Manny, too, have us a real guy adventure. There would be some salmon fishing, and some Bear hunting, maybe just for the pictures, but a hunt. Drop us off on Kodiak island, in a water skipper plane. Okay, Alaska to the Rocky Mountains, this one is for me, my memories, and a video camera. One end to the other, hike, climb, take the railroad, go on the incline at Silverton, go to Georgetown, and pay my respects to the ghosts there, and to uncles ranch in Estes Park. Spend a week there remembering summers as akid. Boulder,My hippy days, C. Springs, kick around there, find some friends I left behind, and lay a few ghosts to rest there too. Then, Arizona, walk the desert , almost like a church some places, swim Sabino, and reminisce about the pretty girls there once too.Find ME,again in Molino basin, San Francsico river, good times. Sedona Creek, before the mysticism tarnished it's real specialness. Then I would set up in Puerto Penasco, Mexico for a Month or so, let the waves wash me clean. I would travel the Colorado in a raft, and the Rougue, and The Columbia, and the American River. Then I would go to those places I want to see. The Amazon, one end to the other, Brazil, gemstones, crate up a load of them. the Yucatan, flocks of macaws in the rainforest.Look up a buddy in Costa rica. Then, Africa, in a small plane, land where there are no roads. Eat the dust of africa, stay at an overlook hotel for a week, and see Victoria Falls, Then, Egypt, and Israel, and Spain, Toledo, France, The Louvre, Rome,The Vatican, have an audience with the Pope. Venice,Pisa, Ireland, pub crawl, Scotland, find the Thomson Castle, England, find Rob, my friend, Germany, the relatives there.Russia, St.Petrov square.and then come back with pictures, video, memories, and a new me.

What a lovely question! and I really like the way u've put it(including the "centered" post :D )!
Hmm. I would want to travel the world. I'll take a book with me which has all the places you simply ought to visit before you die! I wud take lots of photos, interact with ppl on the way, listen to different music, sit on a seashore on all evenings and play music.I wud also love to meet friends from thoughts and click lots of pictures!! :D
And yes, I wud collect mementos from each and every place I visit.

I would love to say that I would spend it traveling or writing-and maybe I would. But as pondering this question, I keep coming back to the same thing in each scenario. There isn't anything I would want to do and not be able to share it with the family that I sometimes love to complain about. The question is no doubt deep and I thank you for that. So often I, like many others, forget the blessings right in front of me. My husband and children sometimes drive me completely bonkers, but I can't imagine being without them even in a fantasy. Is that crazy? And it's not about being lonely. I just know that without them, I'm not me.

reading your answers has been so intersting for me
thanks for all your thoughtfilled repsonses...a travel agent would make a fortune with this group...
I did a little traveling myself yesterday
I fell down the stairs carrying a load of sheets 2 minutes before our company arrived in Michigan for the holiday weekend. While spralled at the bottom of the landing, many thoughts ran through my head...long story short, even though I was convinced I had ruined the weekend to say the least, I figured Id be spending quite a bit a time in the ER, not exactly what I had planned to do this weekend...the good news is, its just a bad sprained ankle.

so Im going to put my best foot forward and spend time with my guests and I doubt I will be waiting on everyone
hand and foot and I will just have to sit back and enjoy the company...not too bad when you really think about it...but I digress, please continue and I an really enjoying your answers!

I would go back to Rome. No matter what road you take you're going to wind up there anyway. And then Constantinople, or Istanbul or Bzantium or whatever they call it now. Then Egypt.

For my sabbatical I am going alone. As much as I love my family. I think that for me to get the best experience form this I need to do it alone, otherwise isn't just another holiday. so with that said, welcome to my sabbatical.

I would start off, by going to a Wellness retreat. To centre my body and soul. Detox and relax and find me again.

Then I would duck of to LA and get a little nip and tuck done, nothing dramitically just fix a few things I don't like. While I was there and after I had recovered I would do a little exploring of the USA. Going to all the place in my Dream journal.

After I had done that I would then duck over to Greece and have my own "Shirley Valintine" momment. (its a move look it up if you like).

Then after I am ready to face the world I would ead home, and start my life renewed and refreashed to be a better mother than I have been.

Like Easy, I'll visit all my thoughts' friends. I'll build my dream house (FINALLY!!). I'll go on a world tour...and take this really long cruise with my boyfriend. And I'd learn all dance forms and open my own dance studio :D
