I woke up in my parents spare bedroom.

Before I remembered what day it was

I noticed my beautiful wedding dress
Hanging on a hanger
in all its glory and splendor
attached to the top of the book shelf
as it was
too big to fit in the closet.

I had prayed for months,
that God would grant me one special wish
for the perfect wedding

and it had nothing to do with the weather

although
that being said

after a long season
of
horrible dreary days,

my wedding day was the very first warm sunny one in ages.

Yet
I could care less about the temperature.

I would not even mind if the flowers were sent to the wrong house,
or if the limo driver got lost making me late for the church,
or if the band only knew a couple of songs,
and if the centerpieces were horrible and the food tasted terrible,

the only thing I needed, wanted or desired
for my big day
the moment I had dreamed about my entire life
were
clear
unencumbered
lips

Please dear God,
do not zap me with the much dreaded cold sore!

I beg you
and go easy on the zits while you are at it
no undergrounders!

I will be a good sport about everything else.

Thankfully
God answered my plea
and
April 18, 1986

was truly one of the happiest days of my life.

My bridesmaids were my best friends from high school
nicknamed
the glove
because there were five of us

I was the last
to tie the knot

The bride had more fun than all the guest combined
giving the longest toast on record

the ushers had to practically wrestle me to the ground
to get the mike out of my hands,

but that's another story

we danced the night away.

Not wanting the magic to end,
I made
my "Maids"
as I liked to call them

promise

they would not go right home
after the reception.

We drove in a caravan to a local hot spot,
honking our horns
all the way
then
parading around in our wedding attire

When we finally arrived at our hotel,
I was a tad teary eyed

I knew I would never
wear my long white flowing dress
and gorgeous beaded shoes
and
poofy veil
ever again!

the veil was designed to look very similar to Laura's
as in Luke and Laura from General Hospital
(they said their vows on TV that same year)
It was a big mistake
ah, you live and you learn
but why didn't somebody tell me?
I digress

another story

Poor Joe was extremely patient as he sat there
watching me spend quite a bit of time

arranging my dress,
veil and shoes
along with his tux

on the couch
in our suite

to look like they were sitting together,

then he waited a little more

till I took a number of photos
of the invisable bride and groom
to include in our wedding album

which is another story.

However
to make a long story short

One week to the day
I woke up to the sound of thunder and lightening
with the biggest
ugliest
unsightly
growth
on my upper lip!

and did I care?
was I self conscious?
nope!
not in the least

I had already experienced
my day in the sun
as the center of attention
smiling in all my glory
with totally kissable lips
and not a single blemish on my rosy cheeks

oh, and FYI
a little footnote

a year ago
a racoon
and its family
who took up residence in our home without our knowledge or permission
used my dress
which was packed away
in my attic
as a urinal

but that's another story

and may I add
lucky for me
poor Joe is still a patient man
all these years later

thank God

because he is waiting for me yet again
this evening
to write this post
before we call it a night
