I was really surprised on my 40th
A few months before I turned 40,
my husband asked me if I wanted a party.
I told him I thought I did,
but now its too late,
because if I had a party,
I wanted it to be
a surprise.
He just ignored that last comment
and
began to look at the calendar
He chose the date and actually wrote out a list of friends.
He thought a nice intimate dinner with a few of our closets friends would be perfect.
I, on the other hand
thought that would be extremely boring

a blow out with some sort of clever theme,
something out of the ordinary,
would be more my cup of tea.

He became quite exasperated
and said
"If you want a party, plan it yourself"
oh that Joe, he is such a kidder!

I wondered how he was going to set it up

and when a friend of ours called
an hour later
and asked us to go to their sky box
at the white sox game
on the exact night we had planned my party

I thought
Wow, not bad big guy
I would never have come up with that one

lah de dah
I did not give it another thought other than trying to decide what I was going to wear

until I received a call
from our friends about a week before the big day.

They said they made a mistake,
the game
was actually a week or two later,
and since we already made plans to get together,
why don't we just go out for dinner.

Ah hah
so its not going to be at their sky box after all
that was pretty extravagant anyway,

so
now its going to be at a restaurant

I told Joe that was a pretty good set up!

"What are you talking about"
he said
"Well, my surprise party of course!"
he reminded me again that he was not having a surprise party
for me
if I wanted one, I had to plan it myself
yeah sure
oh they thought they were so tricky
as the evening approached,
I kept telling everyone
I would see them at my surprise party,
they all played dumb with me
not a single person slipped
they repeated the same thing
numerous times
telling me over and over again
"hey listen, if Joe is having a party for you,
he didn't invite me"
Yeah sure!
The night finally arrived and I put on my new outfit,
took extra time with my hair and make up
and couldn't wait for the evenings festivities to unfold.
I knew I was having a party,
I just did not know when they were all going to jump out of
somewhere?
and
yell
surprise!

Since nothing out of the usual happened
after ordering
and believe me
I was looking around for some balloons
and happy faces the entire time

I was beginning to doubt myself
but not to worry,

soon

our friends suggested we go back to their place for desert.

OMG!
They have a gorgeous house!
I was floored they were holding the party there!
I excused myself and went to the ladies room
to check my make up
and hair

I wonder if they did a
this is your life video?
I was just so excited

then I
wiped the lipstick off my teeth
another story
and headed back to the table

of course all the while
acting like I knew nothing

we finally paid the bill
wow
pretty soon the party would be in full bloom
I wondered what picture they chose of me
to blow up?

When we pulled into their driveway I thought they must have gone to a lot of trouble hiding all the cars,
I was certainly
going to let them know just how much I appreciated
everything they did.
I can't believe I ever doubted Joe's creativity.
never again!

We ate our dessert in their library and I kept thinking

everyone is so quiet
my poor friends must have been waiting such a long time
I wondered what they were up to all night?

Before I knew what hit me

Joe said he was tired and we were going to leave

he thanked them and suddenly
I was back in our car headed for home.

I was dumbfounded,
fun is fun
ok, now where is the party?
I had been a good sport all evening long

Joe, where did you hide our friends?
He stared at me with such a strange confused look on his face

"Rose, I told you,
if you wanted a surprise party
you had to plan it yourself!"

But I thought he was kidding
I guess I was wrong

He assured me, in no uncertain terms

he was not kidding

he tried to plan a party
and I did not like the kind of party he was planning

and then reminded me that he told me
to plan one myself

but Joe,
Carol called me an hour later and asked us to go out on the very day we chose to have the party

then she called back and said she made a mistake
over the date of the sox tickets

but
then she suggested that
we might as well have dinner together
then invited us back to her house
for dessert

yeah, he said
but I told you
I was not going to have a party for you
and
if you wanted one,
you had to plan it yourself

you never listen to me do you?

that's when he began to laugh uncontrollably
and went into his

oh wait a minute act

he started flicking the front porch lights on and off
and
looking down in the basement and telling everyone to be quiet

I really did not know what to think at that point
It was almost 11:30
yet
I was
reluctant to take off my make up
and new outfit

I was still hoping against hope

yet again

when Joe got into bed and started snoring

just  perhaps
oh dah
maybe he did not plan a party
there was a chance
I would not be hearing anyone singing happy birthday to me
that evening

it was a surprise all right
I was surprised beyond belief

I was so surprised
by the fact that
I did not have a surprise party

I woke
or should I say

I poked
Joe
and said

"I just can not believe you did not have a party for me!"

he said
"when are you going to believe me
I told you
if you wanted a party
you had to plan it yourself"

he then fell sound asleep

and at that precise moment
I began to plan my surprise party

and that's another story
