My husband and I
along with 2 of our daughters
drove to Michigan last evening.
We had new floors installed in our cottage
on the main floor this past week
and
we knew we had some icky jobs ahead of us puting the place back in order.
Piles of clothes, shoes, linens, picture frames, knick knacks plus furniture and more
were stacked on top of each other in the only 2 rooms that were not being renovated.
Because of the old granite tile entranceway,
the workman had to drill thru cement
which significantly added to the dust and dirt that awaited our return.
We were exhausted by the time we all went to bed,
although we had not even made a dent
in the work yet to be done.
Sound asleep, lost in a fabulous dream that I cannot seem to recall at the moment
another story
our little town experienced one of the worst thunderstorms on record.
Although I never heard a sound,
I’ve been told the crashing of thunder and lightening
robbed almost everyone else
out of a good nights rest.
My husband had been up a few hours before I opened my eyes
He informed me,
that we had lost our electricity
and he and the girls
were going to go to the grocery store.
I managed to drag my poor aching body out of bed and because it was so dark,
hit the light switch in the bathroom,
Oophs, I forgot, no electricity!
Opening the shades did not shed much light on the situation
at least I was able to find my way to the sink.
Habit made me grab my toothbrush
and at the exact moment the other hand touched the faucet
I realized that for some unknown reason
here in Michigan,
when the electricity goes out, we no longer have water.
I still do not understand the connection, which is not the case at home?
I digress.
Luckily I had a bottle of water on the counter so I tossed a little on my face
and used the remainder to clean my teeth.
Gingerly
heading to the kitchen
I instanltly did an about face to fetch my shoes,
the floor beneath my feet was way too dirty to continue on my path.
Standing in the kitchen I automatically reached for the light switch
I guess I forgot?
First I opened the freezer, intending to return the ice pack I had utilized before retiring
Once inside, I could not help but notice the new fat free chocolate fugicles
that seemed to be calling my name.
Knowing full well, it was a horrible unhealthy choice for breakfast,
what the heck
since noone was home
and I hate to waste perfectly good junk food
I retrieved one from the unopened box only to discover a mushy mess.
It was too late!
darn!
Upon further inspection, much to my disay, our coveted dove bars
were nothing but melted chocolate and evaporated milk.
Hum, things were not looking good.
Toilets did not flush
dishwaters and microwaves were rendered useless.
It was time to search for the remote to check the weather.
OK,
so I was experiencing a little short-term amnesia when I thought it needed new batteries.
I decided to get the scoop and call our neighbor.
It wasn’t until I heard dead silence on the other end
did I remember,
like the water, when we lose electricity around here, the phones no longer function
along with almost everything else?
For about an hour, I absentmindedly continued to flick light switches,
attempted to make a few phone calls,
tuned into the radio or TV,
and tried to cook something in the microwave,
you guessed it
our stove is electric
My lap top has has only a short time before
I am totally cut off from the outside world
.
Thankfully, before I logged on to thoughts,
I checked the weather
a tornado warning is in effect for our area
Oh jeeze, what am I doing here?
I had better log off
yikes, time to call and warn the neighbors!
maybe we could make some popcorn and watch a dvd in the basement
while we ride out the storm
oh, yeah,
OMG
no electricity!
I keep forgetting
maybe I am in denile?
time for plan B
boy oh boy
I really had a taste for popcorn!
but that's another story
I wonder how much time I have before my lap top dies?
