did that really happen or was it my imagination
I was reading a book and it asked a question...
"Do you know the difference between a story and reality?"
Debra Meehl, went on to say
that the mathmatical formula for this is
Time X Space =Realty
Reality is what happens in time and space

when 50 people witness a crime, the author said

there are 50 different stories about what happened.

Stuff happens to us all the time
it is what we do with those experiences, how we process them
that shape our lives and makes the diffference

Our life stories are all punctuated
with good times and bad times
pleasant events and unpleasant events.
some of us focus most of the time on the positive stuff
while others of us
focus on and talk about
the negative stuff

ask any member of a big family about a particular instance
my dad recently said something at a family dinner and we all
immediatley pounced on the poor guy
he had a completely different version
than the rest of us

is this what they call a selective memory?
and if it is...
this means
we can actually select ours?

Or is this rewriting history?

regardless
we should probably do alot more recapping
and rehashing of events
for our kids
just to make sure they get all their facts straight
just in case
 some great memory we had
as a family
that we worked so hard to achieve
doesnt turn against us someday
into one of our kids biggest nightmares
and thats another story

I remember wanting and trying so hard to get my grandmother to rehash stories of her childhood and growing years, we always intended to start tomorrow, unfortunatly, tomorrow never came. I agree with your words.

Good point roe! . We all to a point choose our memories in a selective way that makes us feel comfortable , i know i have , but you are right that we should be carefull that the realities that we create do not hurt or damage others! .

In my experiences, people have a self view, that they try to preserve at all costs. Time, or distance can distort any given experience into something that never happened. Don't be surprised, because, "history is written by the conquerers". Not that we are the conquered, but our kids will secceed us. In our efforts to preserve the true history of events.
We do have video, picturephones, and time stamps on our computers, that helps a little, especially when the stories get a little too distorted, or someone goes to looking for the family vault.

Sometimes my sisters and I joke that our bedrooms in the house must have had some parallel universe happening because on some issues it's like we grew up in three different homes. . .each has our own perspective on almost every event. Interesting post Roe. . .you never disappoint!

I'd say we have selective perception that looks like selective memory
