 Roxy the Cat Comes Back
Hi, my name is Daisy and I have a pet cat, Roxy is her name. When I was real small, a baby even, my Mommy, Daddy and I, went on a trip. I am not sure why we went away, except that it was winter and very cold and Mommy said the place we were going to was going to be real warm and sunny. Daddy told me, that we were going because people would be coming into the house to fix our kitchen. Anyway, because Mommy and Daddy wanted to go, I was going too. After all, when you are small like I was then, they go, you go.

Anyway, the weekend was nice, we stayed at a place that was near a beach and ocean. The sand was white and the ocean was the bluest blue you ever saw. I played on the beach most of the time, and had a good time. Lots of fun. But the whole time while I was there I wondered about what my pet cat Roxy was doing all alone and all by herself. I wondered if she missed me, missed Mommy and Daddy and whether or not the workers that were in the house were nice to her. I think I thought about her because it was just before we left for the trip that I began to call Roxy by her name. Now Roxy is very hard for a little baby to say, but “Rah Rah” is easier and that is what I called my pet cat, Rah-Rah. At least that is what my mommy told me that I said when I was just a baby and learning how to talk.

Daddy told me that on that weekend I would walk around the place we were staying, calling. “Rah – Rah.” Every time I did that, Mommy and Daddy laughed and laughed; they said it was real cute. I think I did this because I missed Roxy and wished she had come to this new place with me and my Mommy and Daddy.

Pretty soon it was time to leave the warm place by the beach and ocean and go back home. On the airplane taking us home, Mommy said I kept saying Rah – Rah. I was excited about going home to see Roxy my favorite pet cat.

Finally after a long plane ride, we came home. Since it was a Sunday, there was no one in the house, no one was home. But it was cold. Colder than any day I can remember. So cold that my little nose and tiny ears became very cold and frozen just from being outside for a little while. It was colder than it was before we went away. But I wanted to see Roxy so bad that I did not feel the cold. I just wanted to see my Rah – Rah.
As soon as we got into the house, Daddy called Mommy and then Daddy ran outside calling “Roxy!” “Roxy!” I heard him calling her over and over, so I began calling “Rah – Rah,” “Rah – Rah!,” as loud as I could, just like my Daddy was doing. Meanwhile, Mommy came to me and picked me up and said, “Roxy is lost, she is gone. We do not know where she is…” I sort of remember Mommy starting to cry and holding me very close and tight. While I do not remember if I knew then what “lost” was, but seeing my Mommy cry, I started to cry too. Where was Rah – Rah? Where was Roxy the cat?

The next day, after sleeping in my very own crib, I woke up and started to call, “Rah – Rah” all over again. Mommy came into my room picked me up and I remember that her eyes were all red and she hugged me and told me that everything would be all right. Daddy was already downstairs, ready to go to work. Daddy usually left the house first, he worked in a place called The City so he had to catch a train. Mommy was very busy with me and getting ready to leave too. My Mommy is a teacher and she left with me Nanny Jean who took care of me, except on Fridays when my Pop – Pop would watch me. Anyway, Daddy left and Mommy was getting ready to leave for her work.

Just then, the workers came to work on our kitchen. Mommy told me that they were going to make us a new and better kitchen. There were two workers, one of them was Curtis, he did not say very much, sometimes if you asked him something, he did not even answer you, but sometimes he would give you a grunt. He was always very busy and he opened and closed the doors a lot. He would go outside and then come inside. Curtis did that a lot too.

The other worker was Al. If Curtis did not talk, Al sure did. But he talked to fast for me to understand him. Daddy and Mommy talked to Al, but they could not understand a single thing he said. He talked too fast and it sounded like his mouth was full whenever he talked. The other thing about the workers was that Curtis always told Al what to do. I don’t think that Al liked being told what to do all the time. I do not think Al liked Curtis, not one little bit.

Anyway, when Al and Curtis came inside, Curtis told Mommy that on Friday, the day after we left, while he was coming inside or going outside the house, Roxy the cat got out of the house and he could not get her back inside. He thought she went under the house, but he was not sure. Mommy quickly ran outside to see if Roxy was there, but she came back into the house a few minutes later, and said, “I may have seen her, but I am not sure. I’ll check again when I come back after school, this afternoon.” Curtis looked at her but did not say anything. Al said something but Mommy and I did not know what he was talking about. Mommy hugged me and said bye – bye. I said, “Rah – Rah” and Mommy gave me another hug. I sure hoped that Roxy would come back.

All day long I played with my toys and Nanny Jean and I waited for Mommy to come home. The workers in the kitchen worked, banged and clanged and kept going out and coming in, but still no sign of Roxy. Then Mommy came home. She began to talk with Curtis and Al and asked them again to show her where they thought Roxy was, but instead of answering Mommy, Curtis motioned for her to follow him and Mommy and Al both went outside. Right after Mommy went outside, I became excited, and went to the door, so my Nanny put my coat on, and we went outside right after Mommy, Curtis and Al did.

Curtis and Al led us to the back of the house and pointed to where they thought Roxy was. Mommy kneeled down and looked under the house. Mommy said it was real dark under there and she could not really see anything too clearly. She said the first thing she saw was a bunch of IN SUL A - something or other – hanging down, and right there, she saw Roxy!

“Roxy, Roxy,” Mommy called again and again, Curtis bent down to look. Al did the same and started talking, but no one understood a single word he said. My Nanny put me down, and she knelt down to see too. Then all at the same time, everyone started yelling, “Roxy, Roxy! real loud. I tried to help too, but my little Rah – Rah was lost in the big people’s yelling. Finally, Mommy stood up and she looked right at Curtis and Al. Right at my Nanny and said, “Curtis and Al, stop it! Jean, stop! Curtis and Al, you go into the house and work on the kitchen. Jean you pick up and Daisy and take her inside. I will get Roxy back!” I thought Mommy was mad at everyone, but she was just trying to get things done. Curtis and Al and Nanny Jean just looked at her. Mommy said, “Did you hear me? Into the house – NOW!!” And you know what? The workers, my Nanny and I, all of us went into the house to wait for Mommy and, just maybe, Roxy.

We heard Mommy calling Roxy over and over, and then pretty soon we heard, “That’s it, come Roxy, come to me…” Then Mommy said, “Good girl Roxy, come right here.” Then we heard a final, “Good girl…” Mommy came into the house holding Roxy! I said as loud as I could, “Rah – Rah” Mommy looked happy but she seemed to be crying too. Nanny Jean clasped her hands to her chest and said, “Roxy!” At the same time, Al clapped his hands, slapped his thighs and said something that no one understood. Curtis grunted and smiled. It was the very first time and, as it turned out, the last time, I ever saw Curtis smile.

Later when Daddy came home, Mommy told him everything that happened. He looked right at Roxy and said, “Roxy, you are one very cold, one very lucky and one very crazy cat.”
I said, “Rah – Rah.”
I was so glad that Roxy, my very favorite pet cat, was back.
