Another day another rant about a recently finished game. As many of you out there know, Assassin's Creed is a title that has been much anticipated and talked about fiercely by many people on many mediums. I am here to tell that if you're looking for the next big thing to catch gaming, you will be mildly disappointed, while this game delivers some interesting elements and a few intriguing aspects, it ultimately will go down as one of those titles that could have been so much better. The game places you in the role of Altair, an assassin on a mission to eliminate key targets during the crusades. The game does an decent job of bringing the cities and country side of this period to life. The cities are carefully crafted and the streets are filled with a sizable array of salesmen, beggars, and guards. The views are simply stunning. from seeing one of the cities on the horizon to climbing up a tower and getting a birds eye view, you wont find to many environments that look better. The people, however, are pretty dull, aside from the sound of salesmen trying to get people to buy things, you won't hear much in the way of conversation unless you bump into someone or start doing activities that are out of the norm, in which case you're treated with the same dozen or so lines of dialogue every time you run up a wall or start jumping around. some of the choices in the A.I. performance are questionable, I mean its for the sake of the game, but are people really not going to notice some guy leaping from the tallest building in the city in to a haystack? the control scheme seems a little complicated at first, but after finishing the training mission you'll be leaping around like a seasoned killer. The gameplay also has its ups and downs. the exploration element is great fun. pretty much any piece of the architecture can be scaled in a convincing fashion, which is a testament to the developers for making an environment the is pretty much 90 percent interactive. but this alone is not enough to sustain the 10-12 hour experience that the game provides. For the most part this game is very enjoyable through the first assassination, after that, it's the same rinse, wash, repeat technique thought the rest of the game. Heres a rundown, you speak to a person, then you investigate the target trough the same four or five uninspired side missions, you kill the person, then you escape, an it's the same for all 9 targets, and on top of that, the side missions are way too easy and the assassinations aren't much harder. There's no real penalty for getting exposed when trying to take out the target and in the later stages of the game when anonymity is supposed to be harder to obtain, all you have to do is blend and problem solved, because apparently putting your head down makes the guards completely oblivious to your presence. And now the story, which can be considered mediocre at best, its pretty much the standard "bigger things at work" plot line and the futuristic deviation is absolute garbage and the ending will literally make you go "What the f**k??". All in all assassin's creed is worth a look as a rental title for its beautiful environments and innovated controls, but the story and painfully repetitive missions will ultimately make one wonder about what could have been rather than what is.
Final Score: 7.5
