It is astonishing to me how a person can be so different from one moment to the next. Part of my job involves seeing people at some of the most difficult times they've ever been through. Sometimes they say things that make me think they are not actually good people. who doesn't have difficulty seeing the inner light of people who are attempting to live out their control issues, experiencing pain and suffering, and not always having an outlet? I try to remember that everyone is doing the best they can with what they know and have. Something (nature?) makes it difficult to maintain that perspective every moment, but I suppose as long as we return to the non-judgemental place, that's ok. Today one of my first patients apologized to me by saying, "I sinned against you". I was stunned. It is remarkable how differently people behave under stress. And inheritly fascinating. And I was completely shocked. I just said, that's very considerate of you, there's no need to apologize, and it's a new day so we'll just do better this time. I found that to be pretty cool, and not an everyday occurance.
What is an everyday occurance anymore, anyway? There's so many really incedible moments. I even feel a little grateful for the patients who at times inspire me to feel like beating my head against a wall. Usually after they go home. Which is kind of a joke. Hugely appreciative of the great moments when something is good, something is real, something is felt so profoundly at the end of the day it brings me to my knees.
