 politics and posers
Worked today got home, too late for the State of the Union address.  Imagine my disappointment.  I miss playing the State of the Union drinking game, which was great fun.  Actually I don't think I've done that since college.  That was great fun.  Every time Bush said, "weapons of  mass destruction," had to take a shot of vodka, or a sip of beer.  And every time he said a word that was more than 4 syllables, another couple of sips of beer.  It makes the speech much funnier.
I have been thinking about politics today.  I'm with Obama, although I have some doubts about his effectiveness, idealism wins in my book over those who will win at any cost (Hillary).
At least Rush Limbaugh isn't running.  I find him not just entirely distasteful, and utterly misled in his political views.  Can't think of anyone I disagree with more.  I also find him quite irritating as a deaf person.  A lot of people don't know that he has a cochlear implant.  He employs a full time stenographer.  He refuses to be deaf.  I just despise that kind of denial.  I'm not saying all people who have cochlear implants should learn sign language.  But this crap about how he "never misses a word" is such bull.  And a stenographer?  I don't understand why some people, it doesn't matter what circumstances they encounter, they're going to resist change of cultural influence, different perspectives.  It really upsets me when deaf people resist learning from deafness or the culture.  Just want to shake him and tell him to stop posing as a hearing person.
I know.  I'm not active at all in the deaf community lately.  Nonetheless part of my identity is entwined with deafness and deaf culture.  Even if my hearing was completely restored today, I have gained more from deafness than I ever lost: it's in the language, the sense of belonging, the instant connection I have to others with so much as a loose affiliation with any aspect of the culture.
On that note, I realized this morning in the shower that I don't hear the water at all.  It's a funny thing.  Often I don't realize what I don't hear, some things have faded so gradually, I have no idea if I ever heard them, and I don't notice until one day I'm conscious of the sound.  Which really makes it all the much more intense when I do hear it.
Church on Sunday was really neat.  The children's choir from Uganda was my favorite.  Just the expressions on their faces.  Complete joy, to be there dancing and singing in front of this huge congregation.  What circumstances have they risen above?  And the self expression, especially in front of an audience, just leaves me awestruck.
I could just keep writing on and on tonight....
