I just want to teach people that progress and environmental destruction are not the same thing. I want everyone to know that our economy can not grow indefinitely, and that destroying ecosystems nondiscriminately can not go on forever. I want every person to realize that the real "bottom line" has nothing to do with economic revenue, and everything to do with ecological processes. Why are there still people around who do not realize that Earth's supplies are being depleted faster than they are being restored, that "nature" is not somehow seperate from us, and that money can not buy the things we need because the Earth does not accept money in exchange for clean water, clean air and healthy soil? Teaching people to know, to care, and to care to know is possibly the most important job I can think of, because no matter what technologies there are to reduce waste, it is people who have to use those. I have been trying to think of ways to do this, but the more I think of it the more I realize how overwhelmingly large and daunting to task is. Then I remembered: "many stones to form an arch, singly none, singly none. And by union what we will can be accomplished still" I had that song in my head all day yesterday, and I think this is why. If thinking of a big solution interests any of you, or you have an idea of how we can work together in this, please let me know. Without hope I am lost, and there is nothing more important for me to spend my time on. LOVE Rachel
