Both creationism and evolutionism are theories, and only one of these theories enjoys
a commanding dominance when it comes to the general and collective consensus of
opinion within the modern scientific community. The difference between theoretical
evolutionism, and theological creationism is not the difference between two orthodox
dogmas; but instead, it is the difference between a consensus of opinion that is based
upon an orthodox religious dogma, and a consensus of opinion that is based upon a
general agreement of opinion within the collective and organized thinking of the scientific
community.
A deistic form of theism can accept both a form of creationism, and a form of evolutionism,
with a divine act of creation operating within the very process of evolution.
Perhaps the intelligent design that we discover in the cosmos has everything to do with
the human mind as the actual and collective creator of the universe. Maybe the design
is not so much an objective reality, but more like a subjective reality.
Perhaps we are only going from one accidentally adopted mythology to another accidentally
adopted mythology. Who can say?
Creationism and intelligent design are pre-scientific beliefs, or proto-scientific beliefs.
They can also be pseudo-scientific beliefs, although I can see a creationist being a
good and true scientist. I have never talked to a scientist who was also a creationist.
I do not know how a creationist-scientist would explain the fossilized facts, and the fact
of biological diversity.
So much of creationism, and of intelligent design is more metaphysical than scientific.
Science is more a methodology, and not so much a metaphysic. A metaphysical theist
can be a very good and very true practicing scientist, who knows that the practice of real
science is founded upon a routine methodological atheism. A theist who can seek to
discover a material cause of some fact, thing, or event can be a good scientist. If a theist
seeks to discover a theological cause of some fact, etc., then that theist is not seeking a
scientific cause. A scientific explanation of anything must be constructed upon the scientific
method, which method excludes from consideration such conceptions as supernatural
miracles, or such other conclusions as would include superstitious, psychical, mystical,
or spiritual descriptions.
Evolution is a scientific theory, based upon an observation of physical and organic reality.
But, evolution is a theory, and is thus a creation of the human mind doing the observing.
The theory of evolution is a product of the human mind observing the perceived world. The
mind penetrates into the world, deciphering the facts of the world, discovering and
distinguishing the many facts of reality, even determining what the facts are, even
discriminating between the order of the facts, etc.
"Radical criticism sets itself the task of freeing philosophy from the trammels imposed
upon it by all the orthodoxies of our age, and of past ages too. . . . It's ultimate criterion is
mankind itself -- the life of men and the immorality of a society which denies them the
elementary rights and freedoms they need."
