That human beings must often make sacrifices isnot a fascist view. That human
beings must always do their duty is not a fascist idea. Fascism was a perversion
of the virtuous ideal of sacrifice, an evasion of the true concept of duty.
Contracts are all too often based upon bad faith; and there is no moral obligation
or duty to keep faith with such a contract, no matter how legal the contract is, and no
matter how lawful the enforcement. Commercial contracts and business contracts
are all too often the base and sordid instruments of slavish extortion, and of greedy
manipulation.
A tax can be called a tithe, if you will. There is an obligation of pay for goods and
services. If society provides you with goods and services, then there is a moral
obligation to voluntarily pay a tax/tithe for these goods and services.
A draft can be called service, if you will. There is a duty to willingly serve your
community as you are able. With every right we enjoy, there is a duty we must
perform. Every freedom that we possess comes with some responsibility. There
is always a cost that comes with winning and keeping our freedoms.
There is a difference between responsibility and obligation (duty, tax), on the one
hand, and munificence and voluntary gratuity (donation, offering), on the other hand.
There is a tithe, and there is a gift. Tithes and taxes have to do with duty; gifts and
donations have to do with a kind of gratuitous pourboire.
There is a necessary connection between moral liberty and moral obligation,
between political freedom and public responsibility, between the rights of a
citizen and the duties of a citizen.
"People with power want money; people with money want power."
