It is said by some that "a lynch mob is a perfect example of a democracy". Some will
interpret the Constitution of the United States -- which guarantees that every state will
have a republican form of government -- as being wholly against, and totally opposed
to a democratic form of government. Although it is true that our republican form of
government is not a democratic form of government, nevertheless a republican form
of government can be, or can become a democratic form of government.
A true democracy is a republic; and, a true republic is a democracy. If a constitution
can guarantee a republican form of government, then a constitution can also
guarantee a democratic form of government. If a democracy can go sour, then a
republic can also go sour. If human beings cannot live in a strong and sturdy
democracy, then human beings cannot live in a healthy and sound republic. Whatever
people must be and do in a workable and durable republic, so also people must be
and do in a workable and durable democracy.
"To think ill of mankind, and not to wish ill to them, is perhaps the highest wisdom
and virtue."
-- William Hazlitt
