Thoughts
That a slave does not exercise their natural and enduring freedom does not deny the
reality and existence of freedom. As long as the slave is alive, the slave's freedom lives,
even if that freedom is eclipsed and obscured by slavery.  The slave who decides to
disobey, and thus to die, is truly revealing their freedom. When the slave decides to
disobey, when the slave accepts the punishment of death, that slave is truly free.
When such a slave has been executed, for being disobedient, then that slave's
freedom ends with the end of their life.  Freedom is revealed when the slave rebels;
freedom is concealed when the slave obeys.  Freedom can be suppressed; but,
freedom cannot be erased.

"Freedom and slavery! The one is the name of virtue, and the other of vice, and both are
acts of the will."
-- Epictetus

So death is now the end of freedom? I was under the mistaken impression that death was the end of life. As documented by some slaves pre-abolition, some viewed death as the beginning of freedom. But perhaps you are wiser than they were.

The death of one individual human being
is also the death of that individual's
freedom. Individual death is the end
of one individual's freedom. When the
life of an individual has come to an
end, the freedom of that individual has
also come to an end.

It is very true that some/many/most
individual slaves believed that the
death of a person is the beginning
of another life, the beginning of a
new life of freedom. However, I
believe that death is the end of
life. Whether or not I am wiser than
those who believe in life after
death, I suppose no one can say
with certainty.

Thank you for your comment.

Sincerely,
