Both "society" and "socialism" are derived from the Latin word "socius", which means:
united, associated, allied, shared, joint, companion, associate, fellow, partner, ally,
confederate.  Of course, there is the Latin word "societas", which means: union, society,
fellowship, association. (See the Langenscheidt Latin Dictionary)

The important point about the word "socialism" is that it is a belief that society ought to
govern itself, rather then be governed by capital (capitalism) or by the state (statism).
Socialism is against capitalism, and against statism.

One can, by force of will, become a new person.  This is the meaning of free will.
