Thoughts
The sufferings of the poor are very real; but, they are all too often neglected, all too
easily ignored. The loss of hope in the future, of faith in humanity, is palpable in so
much of what is spoken and written these days.

"Equal pay for equal work!"
-- Anonymous

If one generation makes the sacrifices necessary to earn freedom, then the freedom
one generation earns is granted to the next generation. The next generation must then
make the necessary sacrifices, both to keep their given freedom, and to earn even
more freedom.

"Always obey your superiors if you have any."
-- Samuel Langhorne Clemens ("Mark Twain")

If "eternal vigilance is the price of liberty", then eternal vigilance is also the price of a
true and stable democracy.

Most people are too overworked to pay attention to what politicians are doing, or to
become involved in political activism. People who cannot really influence government
will tend to become very disengaged from politics, and very disinterested in what
government is doing. Working people are not lazy, or stupid, because they are so
detached from government. We grow up in authoritarian homes, we are educated in
authoritarian schools, and we work under authoritarian discipline; and so, it is little
wonder that we capitulate to an authoritarian government.

How does capitalism help us to avoid the many deceptions of politicians, and the
fraudulent activities of the wealthy?

What criticism can be made against democracy that cannot also be made against
capitalism?

"Self-preservation is the first principle of our nature."
-- Alexander Hamilton

If you have no interest in hope, but only in the facts that exist, then you can have no
vision, no better prospect. Evil happens; but so does a lot of good. If good deeds can
still happen in a capitalist society, then I can imagine that good acts will prosper and
flourish even more in a truly democratic commonwealth.

"The tyrant dies and his rule is over; the martyr dies and his rule begins."
-- Sören Aabye Kierkegaard
