Does it have to always be that some are less well off than others? Of course, those
who are born with infirmities will be less well off than others; but, a good community
can make every honest effort to reduce and to lessen the harm and the pain that
come from infirmities. Caring for infants and children, for the sick and the aged, are a
sacrifice that we can freely and joyfully make as humane beings.
It is often said that the normal state of most of the people who ever lived on this
planet has been one of hardship, lack of food, lack of amenities, war, violence,
disease and sqallor. It has often been said that hardship, poverty, and violence
have been the normal state of mankind. But, some of these are not the normal
state of mankind. None of these are the necessary state of humankind.
"The wealth of a country is its working people."
-- Theodor Herzl
We do not all come into the world poor.
We do not always escape poverty through individual industry, or through individual
ingenuity.
"Modern man lives under the illusion that he knows what he wants, while he actually
wants what he is supposed to want."
-- Erich Fromm
"You know what I think about violence. For me it is profoundly moral, more moral than
compromise and negotiation."
-- Benito Mussolini
