 Thoughts
As a rule, in a capitalist political-economy -- where the competitive economic war of all
against all is played out -- contracts are precisely used as an instrument of private
aggrandizement. The world of capitalism is replete with day-to-day examples of harmful
contracts. As time goes by, capitalism will wear away the better side of human nature;
capitalism will eventually erode the moral and friendly aspects of human relations. I listen
to a radio talk-show program, here in Atlanta, Georgia, with a host named Clark Howard,
who answers consumer questions. It is shocking what people will stoop down low to do
to screw other people, to extort and to squeeze all they can get out of other people. Those
who like capitalism will believe that these examples of bleeding customers, and of
fleecing consumers, are an exception to everyday fair practice, an anomalous deviation
from the common operations and the general processes of doing business in a capitalist
environment. There are those who will blame human nature, rather than find fault with
capitalism.

That people have to be so careful in making agreements, and so suspicious of other
people, is against human nature. Capitalism is against human nature. Capitalism is
against our better human nature.  Capitalism is against our more refined, our more
enriched human nature. Capitalism cultivates and promotes the mean side, the base
side of our human nature. As one is enriched more and more with material wealth and
physical property, one is more and more impoverished in spirit, drained of human
meaning and depleted of humane feelings. After we have overthrown capitalism we
will need to recover the more generous and friendly side of our human nature; we will
have to heal and salvage the more neighborly and the more social features of our human
nature.
