If dust is mostly skin cells and hairs from pets, will a house that has been deserted for a long time still be dusty when it's doors are opened the next time a few decades later?

I Am Legend

Went with the boyfriend to see I Am Legend earlier on today. Up until the end I was very impressed, but it was quite a disappointing finale, it looked like it was added five minutes before the film was released, without much care taken to stick to the details of the rest of the film.
