 school - twins
As the twins grow, now five and in infant school, they have a new teacher, I find it difficult ( more from a lack of time) to understand the different methodologies teachers employ.

This year the issues are that this young lady – seems to have no maternal sensitivity, Little S seems to be getting behind in reading and writing, when I know very well, he is capable and above average.

My mother who was a head mistress herself of a 3 – 11 year old school in west London, cannot explain it to me in logical terms.

I cannot remember the way I was taught at that age more fun, dress up and the sort.

I can scare the best of people, but any advise on getting a partnership with this school?

puck...I always go into the school and say to the teacher and say this "How can I help you to make this the best learning experience possible for my child?" What can we be doing at home to improve his reading and writing skills? How can we support you? Seems if you go in with the partnership attitude, teachers respond better. She needs your support to make little S's learning experience better. I would also take little S to the book store and purchase a series of books that he has an interest in and make sure we read them together nightly. Good luck!

I think you just need to let them know constantly that you are a caring parent who is keeping an eye on his child's progress. Hopefully next year will be a better one as it seems to be impossible to find a great teacher for every year. However, if he is bright he will succeed and this is just a little hiccup. Good luck!

Baby and oldest have that issue (a boy thing? I know your daughter is very advanced, as is mine) too.. and I've taken them to the library (it helps to be outside the home/school environment) everyday, reading and having them write more. Plus - with all the books, they're bound to find scores of books that interests them each time. I also proof read, and explain their writing.. and have them write a final after the rough draft's been corrected.. it becomes a habit.. and so .. I do believe I'm getting somewhere. Just my take on what I've done. You could also look into tutors? xx

Not really my area of expertise, lol...but, I think, Elaine's advice was very sound "let them know constantly that you are a caring parent who is keeping an eye on his child's progress". Interestingly the results of a worldwide study have only recently been released that show children's literacy skills are better if a child is not taught to read or write in a structured way until they are around the age of 7. Prior to that reading and writing skills should be taught through informal means; play, projects, shared story reading etc. - Bia.
