 The Story of Harley...
It was two weeks before Christmas 2008 and I was coming back from a visit with my in-laws, who live in Ozark Missouri about 2 hours away. As I was coming back home I had just crossed the Arkansas/Missouri State Line and in the lane beside me was a Truck Driver with no trailer. As the trucker pulled ahead of me I saw a black ball of fur go running across this two lane highway, and apparently so did this truck driver because he swerved over into my lane and hit the breaks to keep from this black ball of fur. I immediately looked into my review mirror to make sure no traffic was behind me, and then I jerked my Van over to the shoulder and came to a sudden stop.

I then jumped out of my Van and ran across the two lane Highway and into the median in the same direction that the black ball of fur, who I thought was a puppy, went in. I spotted it and confirmed it was a puppy and I ran after it and scooped the puppy up just as it was going to dart across the other side into the two lane highway that was full of traffic. As I held him tight and ran back to my Van this little black puppy was licking me all over as if to say "Thank You". We got into my Van and I checked the puppy over to make sure it was not hurt and I saw no visible injuries, but I did discover that this puppy was a male.

I then thought what if this puppy was someones Christmas present?? There were no homes at all right on this highway in either direction, but there were 2 roads that went off this highway. So I went down each road knocking on every door and no one claimed this puppy as theirs or knew who it belong too. So I took this puppy and started heading on home, but first I stopped at my Vets office to make sure he was OK internally, and to get him some shots because I have three other dogs at home. The Vet gave him a perfect bill of health and his shots. The Vet, also confirmed that he is a purebred Black Labrador Retriever. They also put up a FOUND sign at their office.

Well after two weeks no one claimed him for their own so he ended being my Christmas Present who I believe came from God!!

You see I am a 35 year old female and I have osteoarthritis, chronic fibromyalgia, and degenerative disk disease and I have already had back surgery once, and looks like I will have more in the future according to my doctors, and one day possibly end up in a wheelchair. Well after this Black Lab, who I named Harley, became part of my family I started to do some research on the Internet and at the library on Labrador Retrievers. I found out that these Black Labs are not just good for bird hunting, but they are great for rescue and helping people. They make a special harness that has a loop on the back that stands up so that a person can hold onto it and the Lab can help pull that person up out of a chair, or to pull you around in a wheelchair. They also are great for putting people who have been hurt or needs medical attention in what they call a safe emergency position until help comes.

I do not think that on the day that I found Harley on the Highway was a coincidence, because I was not planning on staying at my in-laws as late as I did, but every time I was going to leave something else would come up in conversation and I would stay a little longer. So you see I thought I was saving Harley that day on the highway, but now I know that he was sent to me to save me. Harley and me spend our days playing, and training so when the day comes that I need him he will be there trained and ready to help.

I never thought that I would own a Black lab, but now that Harley is in my life, I cannot imagine my life without him.

What a wonderful story, Pixie.

You were there at that moment for a reason...and you have a beautiful, loyal gift to show for it! :)

Hugs,

You are so right. He is my life, he NEVER leaves my side even when I shower he is there right outside the shower door. He follows me to very room, outside, and even goes bye bye with me.

I and a professional are currently working and trainging Harley to be a rescue dog for the Buffalo River and for all the hiking trails here.

Just two weeks ago a photographer was up on a cliff trying to get shots of a WaterFall and lost his footing and feel 32 feet. His body was badly broken, but he was a live. He hada GPS with a beacon on it and even with the beacon on it took 36 hours to find him. They knew the spot from where he fell but it was such a wide and vastly growth and he could have landed anywhere.

If harley was fully trained they said it would have only taken about 12-16 hours to probably find according to data and research.

They guy lived and is currently in the Hospital.
