No matter where you live you cannot escapr evil. This is one of the things that is going on in my neck of woods about 55 miles away.
Trial dates have been set in the alleged dragging/assault of a 24-year-old man in Marion County last summer, and court records indicate drugs, alcohol and even romance were involved in the August incident.
Arrest affidavits filed in the case against five individuals — James Bennett, 19, of Yellville; Nichole Jones, also known as Nichole Murphy, 24, of Lakeway; and Gregg Bryant, 20, Martin Zobus, 31, and Felisha Besse, 21, all of rural Boone County — explain the alleged incident from beginning to end.
According to the affidavit:
• Marion County deputies were called to a residence on MC 8050 in the early morning hours of Sunday, Aug. 23, where emergency responders were treating Christopher Collier, 24. Collier told authorities he thought he’d been shot and dragged down the road.
• Witnesses told deputies they were driving down the road when they met a vehicle driven by Collier in a curve. Collier stopped and asked them for help, at which time they took him to their residence and called 911. They said Collier stated he “had to take a truck to get away from them” and didn’t want to go to jail for that.
• A little while later, another Marion County resident called and reported his house had been broken into and there was blood all over the house. That man said the only thing missing from the house was a set of keys for a truck that had been outside and was also missing. That truck was identified as the one Collier had been driving.
• Officers followed a clear blood trail from that house back to Highway 14, where they found blood spatters that covered about 1,400 feet on the highway, as well as both of Collier’s shoes in the ditch along the highway.
• Collier’s mother told investigators that the night before, which was Collier’s birthday, Collier had been speaking to Murphy on the phone and later told his mother that Bennett and Murphy were coming to pick him up to take him to Murphy’s house in Marion County.
• Collier said Murphy and Bennett urged him to go to her house that night, but he said he couldn’t drive because he’d been drinking. Murphy, who said they had a surprise for him, then offered to pick him up, although Collier was reluctant at first “due to having issues with” Bennett. Collier told officers that he’d had sex with Murphy the Friday night before, that Murphy and Bennett were romantically involved and he didn’t want problems. But because it was his birthday, he thought they might have something special planned for him and agreed.
• Collier said that when they arrived at Murphy’s house, all five suspects were present. He said he was told to go inside while the others stayed outside.
• He said that when they went back inside the residence, he heard a loud bang and was dragged outside. He said he remembered Bennett trying to tie him up and telling him to be still or it would be worse if he struggled. He said he recalled Bennett saying they were “‘going to make an example out of you.’”
• Collier said the next thing he knew he was being dragged down the highway at Lakeway behind a pickup. He said that when he finally got loose he overheard someone say they were “going to finish him off.” He then made his way to the house where he took the truck.
Collier was taken to St. John’s Regional Health Center in Springfield, Mo., for treatment.
During the investigation, the affidavit said, Murphy told investigators that she and Bennett went to Bergman and bought a bag of marijuana. She admitted speaking to Collier on the phone, but denied picking him up.
Bennett denied going to Bergman and getting marijuana. The affidavit said he was at the house the night officers arrived to interview Jones.
The affidavit said Bennett let officers search his pickup at the residence. Investigators found blood spatters on the back, tailgate and license plate of the pickup, but Bennett said he “had a deer commit suicide and hit the back of his truck.”
Officials said all five defendants are free on bond awaiting trial, which is set for Jan. 13. Pre-trial hearings have been set for Dec. 2.
