| Shark week, a 4 year olds fascination
|
|
|
When my kids were small they were enthralled with "shark week" on the discovery channel. My son in particular.....he would get so excited when the first commercials came out....."Mommy! Mommy!! it will be shark week soon"!!!....He made me go so far as to mark it on the calender so we could count "this many days" ....until shark week....
We had lived on the shores of Puget Sound at the time.My children spent countless hours on the beach collecting specimens....Bringing home hermit crabs, baby crabs (baby crabs look like spiders) countless shells, sand dollars and occasionally little fish.....anything brought in "live" was promptly taken back to the tide....New rule....no bringing home live creatures....look,enjoy and let live....finally it sunk in...I was beginning to think I had two future marine biologists....I think living on the sound prompted my sons interest in marine life and his fascination with sharks.....My children being former "Phoenicians" (both were born in Phoenix,Arizona) and desert rats....living on the Sound became bigger than life itself.....
Shark week finally arrives....the house is buzzing......now this child that I would have to fight with on a nightly basis when it was time to come in for the night......would make a major turn around.....he would count the hours from when he first woke up....to the minutes....and final seconds.....I swear this boy lived for shark week......A week of bliss......LOL....no talking while Austin was getting his shark fix......he stock piled his brain with shark facts and stories......talking only allowed during commercial breaks.....and then it could only be about "sharks".....otherwise he had no problem of telling you how annoyed he was with you.....some times a hard lesson learned by a Mom and an older sister....we humored him and let him have his week.......it was after all shark week......
He was four going on thrity seven.....watching his facial expressions was priceless....even his sister that found him annoying....would get a kick out of watching him.....he would spout off shark facts....and quiz us to see what we knew.....I was about 50/50....I was told I needed to pay better attention....this might save my life one day....I thanked him for his concern....I really appreciated it...if he had only known that my Mother had already ruined it for me....When I was a kid she dragged me along to the movies to see Jaws....its been umpteen years later....I still haven't recovered...It took me years to be the first one in the pool....you never know a plane could of been flying over head being transported to some marine park.....only to fall out of the plane and into our pool.....I don't swim in lakes, ponds and the ocean is off limits....I'm more of a toe poker anyway....testing the waters with ones toe....if it doesn't get bit off.....I'm free to go up to my ankles....
My parents come up for a visit.....they are sitting with my son out on the deck.....he's telling them all about sharks.....my folks are nodding and smiling.....listening with big fascination.....A word he says catches my ear "catissapoles"...ca-tis-sa-poles.....what is that?......Come to find out he was talking about sharks being ca-tis-sa-poles....cannibals......cannibalistic sharks....WOW.....gross....but then again wow.....needless to say we had a good laugh over the "catissapole" sharks.....not in front of him....so anyhoo....if swimming in warm waters....watch out for "catissapole" sharks.....sounds like a cross between a cat and a tadpole.....a fuzzy tadpole with whiskers and claws....it could happen....We have only scratched the surface as to what is out there.....though I wouldn't want to run into one of those....I have no desire to run into a shark either.....Mind your fingers and toes this summer....who knows what all lurks beneath....

I never watched shark. I have seen every Jaws movie though. My mothers idea. I don't go in the ocean because I'm afraid of the jellyfish. I will go into a pool, no fear.

My Dad had been stung vacationing in Spain by a jellyfish. He doesn't like those little buggers at all. Shark week is in the summer time. Unfortunately they repeat so much...they do throw in some new stuff, though mainly its all repeats.

I have a fascination with sharks and own all the Jaws movies, The Deep, etc! I also love the ocean, but to this day, I won't go in deep and when my kids do, I am a nervous wreck until they come out! Shark infested waters off the coasts of Puerto Rico where I'm from, yikes! I share your son's fascination and I do think you've got a future marine biologist there! Good for him :-) Smart boy!
