Kitchen mishap meatloaf anyone?
I had another kitchen mishap lastnight.Chicken satay.....I renamed it peanut butter chicken. It just needed to be plopped onto bread and slathered with jelly. It was God awful.Sometimes you can make substitutions in a dish and it can come out fine...not this time.I discovered that orange marmalade was not a good substitution for orange juice.I should of gone to the store.

This reminded me of another mishap I had years ago....

Remember plastic fingernails? This was well before press on nails.I found these hard clear plastic ones which I thought were nice (thought being an over statement)you could polish them any color you wanted. All you had to do was glue them on no filing required and polish. They would last a couple of days before they started popping off.

I had spent the day cleaning the house.I had my hands in lots of toxins that day,not good for fake nails.

I decide to make meatloaf for dinner.Im smushing up the mixture with my hands, take my hands out start getting the meat gunk off my fingers.....something looks off....balls on a heifer I lost a nail!Im plunge my hands back into the meat goo feverishly looking for the lost fingernail.I cant find it...maybe it popped off while I was cleaning?Anyway I cant find the fingernail so I figure all's ok.I proceed  to plop the meat glob into the pan and bake it.

Meatloaf happens to be my Brother in laws favorite dinner. He can slather all the ketchup his heart can stand onto it.Hes pretty jazzed about dinner. We have all filled our plates and begin eating.Jim is chewing and has a funny look on his face...he sticks a finger into his mouth and pulls out this little hard thing.I'm already thinking shoot the jig is up.At this point hes thinking bone or something along those lines.Hubby and him are both inspecting this little anomaly.I fess up...."Um...I lost a fingernail today I checked the meatloaf....couldn't find it...I thought I lost it cleaning "(I always explain way too much)"Jim I think thats my fake nail".My husband comes from a long line of champion gaggers.Jim starts to gag and a 6'5" 400lb man gagging is well......FUNNY! I know, hes in distress...it was an accident, not a planted fingernail. So big Jim is gagging and my Hubby starts sympathetic gagging. Now its two GROWN MEN  about to toss their dinner.Jim gets up hes lost his appetite, the hubby still sits there gagging. He has tears streaming down his face by now.My toddler daughter is sitting in her chair watching this go one and she begins to laugh.Even toddlers know that grown men gagging can be entertaining.

My Brother in law had a germ phobia that went back to his youth. His Mother made mostly one pot meals and used bread and butter as a filler. There were 4 kids in the family and then 2 cousins came to live with them so now she had 8 people to feed. She really had to stretch her budget.Jim having this germ phobia prompted his siblings to touch his food so they could have it.He wouldn't  touch his dinner with a ten foot pole if someone stuck their finger in it.So, I suppose having the piece of meatloaf that held the "prize" didn't make him feel like a winner.

We ended up ordering pizza later that night.Jim had recovered from the horrors of having a prize in his dinner.I didn't make meatloaf for a long time after that. They wouldn't let me live it down. One of lifes "Ripleys believe it or not" moments".Sometimes stuff just happens.

I gave up the plastic fingernails after that and moved onto acrylic.I found those broke off and into stuff as well....if they only knew.

Do you know that Chicken Satay in peanut butter sauce is originally from Indonesia, Singapore or Malaysia? I never use orange, even more marmalade. In Indonesia we sweeten the peanut sauce with sweet soy sauce (kecap manis)and a bit of palm sugar (brown sugar)and for those who like sweet & sour taste, we use tamarind or vinegar or lime juice.

Finger nail in meatloaf is bad, what about a band-aid? Apparently the cook had a cut on his finger and he put a band-aid on and it lost in the burger patty.....

Lmao! I haven't lost a band aid yet in food though I am sure that will eventually happen to me.Thank you for a recipe for real peanut butter sauce.I had brown sugar and vinegar on hand. This sauce recipe was one of Rachael Rays 30 minute meal jobs.I tried to substitute with what I had that was kind of like what her recipe called for.Big disaster, lol.

At least it was YOUR fingernail and not some strangers - my family once ordered a pizza pie and found a cap from a tooth in it! Needless to say, we never ordered pizza from that particular place again. Anyway, thanks for the laugh - it gave me the second wind I needed to get back to work!
