Give me a break -birth of Liam
Its Monday 24th May 1999, i'm lying on a hospital bed 12 days overdue with my first child with machines attached listening to his heartbeat. The room was empty just me and my son everything was perfect until the heartbeat stopped for a few seconds and then re-started, i tried calling for the doctor but nobody came. An hour later the doctor came in and ripped the graph from the machine and noticed the flatlines. He asked if I had moved or coughed to which i told him I hadn't. He sent me away and told me to come back on Wednesday and left. I went home in a panic with no answers.

On Wednesday 26th May 1999, i'm lying on a hospital bed 14 days overdue with my first child with machines attached listening to his heartbeat. The room is almost empty, just me, my son and a nurse, everything was perfect until the heartbeat stopped for a few seconds again then  re-started again, the nurse stood by the machine and waited, a minute went past and the heartbeat stopped, and then re-started. This happened two more times she then decided to leave the room and call a doctor. The doctor arrived and he stood over the machine and watched it happen another three times. At this point he switched off the machine, looked at me and asked me to fetch my maternity bag as I was going to be induced and he had to come out today, then he left.

I walked to my car confused and not really knowing what was happening. I called my mum and she came to the hospital.

I was taken to the delivery suite, the doctors were chatting around me attaching various machines to various parts including a clip to my unborn childs head. The midwife walked in a broke my waters with a crochet needle and then left. I lay there for eight hours with the machines bleeping, i had no pain. The doctor came in and gave me pethidine and said i was going to have a c section as he couldn't find the heartbeat and took me to theatre. I was given a spinal block and left for it to take effect. Suddenly a little beat started on one of the machines. His heartbeat was back. I was taken back to the labour room with the midwife but after ten minutes the beat became faint. She stood looking at her watch and after some time called the doctor in a said his heartbeat has been down for nine minutes and we need him out now.

Back in theatre the room was filled with a variety of doctor, nurses, midwifes and all their assistants. The screen came up and Liam was delivered in four minutes.

They whisked him away for a couple of minutes and then the crying started. He was here, he is crying all is good.

They handed Liam to my mum while a block was placed under my arm for support. Then I held him. It was the best feeling holding this perfect little boy. I only held him for a minute when the nurse whisked him out of my arms and ran off with him, I was wheeled into recovery and Liam was nowhere around. I asked where he was and all they said was they were working on him he'll be back soon. Half an hour later he was brought to recovery, machines attached and in a crib next to me. His heartbeat had stopped for a few seconds. We were observed for the night and the next morning we were taken to the labour ward with all the other mums and their babies. He was feeding, crying and sleeping. He was fine the drama was over..... Or so I thought............

More tomorrow. xxx
