This came by way of email on Monday from Juli in Kenya.
Dear friends & family,
I am sure by now many of you have heard the reports about the unrest occurring in Kenya after the presidential elections held on December 27. For those who have written to me with concern, thank you for your emails and for your prayers. I have been out of the country climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro for the past week (I will share more about that amazing experience at a later time) but have been heartbroken over the violence occurring within this land. Step by step, I climbed a mountain; and with each step, I prayed for the people of Kenya. I returned to Nairobi last evening and am staying with friends until I can return to Kipkaren.
The reasons behind the violence are very complex and too detailed to try and explain within this email; but over the past week, over 255,000 people have been displaced from their homes and 486 people have been killed. As of this afternoon, President Kibaki and Raila Odinga (the opposition) have agreed to meet for negotiations. It is clear that there were serious errors in both the counting and reporting of the votes from the election, but the way forward for resolving this issue has yet to be determined. There is a spiritual battle occurring that must be fought spiritually. I ask you to join me in prayer.
I am praying for justice and peace to reign. I am praying for both parties to lay down their pride for the sake of the people. I am praying for revival to come- to bring healing and reconciliation to this country. The evilness of tribalism has surfaced in the form of hatred and violence. I am praying for provision for all who are left without homes and for comfort for all who are grieving over the loss of life.
I spoke with friends earlier today in Kipkaren, and they reported that things were calm and everyone was well. Please join me in praying for continued safety and provision for our 182 children at the children's homes in Kipkaren and Ilula and for wisdom and discernment for our leadership as we face this one step at a time.
If I am confident of anything, this I know: God is with us and will never leave us. I rest in that this night. Thank you for your continued love and support for all of us in Kenya. With much love, Juli |
