| Well, it is official, the summer Olympics in 2016 |
What a beautiful place Rio can be, yet just outside of town, poverty is rampant. Rio actually has the reputation to be among one of the most violent cities in the world.
There are movies depicting this such as City of God. Most of the violent crime is in the shantytowns, but the odd thing about Rio is that many of the slums are right next to some of the wealthiest areas.
I have a friend from Rio. She started out as a young girl living in the poverty part of Rio but her mother then married a rich man and they moved into Rio proper and ended up having a very nice life, thankfully.
Whenever I go to the Rio in Vegas, I think of that friend. The next summer Olympics will not be the Rio Olympics, however, in 2012 the summer Olympics will be in London.
But closer to us here in the US, the next winter Olympics, just this next February and March (2010) will be in Vancouver, BC, Canada.
