 Shooting Tragedy

People want to outlaw guns because of the shooting tragedies...
there are lots of shooting tragedies in recent years. Should
we outlaw guns??? That is the first thing that comes to mind.
But, it is wrong. More specifically, it is the wrong thought process.
First of all, you can't outlaw crazy people. In fact, the law excuses
behavior done while insane. Remember that whole Lizzy Borden
story? Her weapon of choice was an axe. Remember that guy
who shot someone with a crossbow? Archery murder was his
delight. And, lots of people choose the knife, dagger, or shank method
of dealing death. And, we still can't outlaw crazy people. But, guns
can deal mass death quickly, so they should be outlawed, right?
Maybe. But, maybe we should try to be more observant of the people
around us. Maybe if we were more considerate and friendly to those
around us and actually TALKED to those around us, we could lessen
the numbers of outraged killers and, more importantly, recognize the
crazies before they let fly their leaden revenge. Guns have been around
for over 200 years now. Crazies have been around even longer. Random
anger is a new thing. That is the enemy, not guns.

I have always beleive in this: Guns don't kill people, PEOPLE kill people. BUT if a person is "crazy" enough, they will get a gun at any means, be it from Daddy's gun case, or from a friend. I honestly feel that there should be harsher punishments for people who commit crimes with guns.

Dear paul,
Great blog!
I personally am a gun enthusiast, and I used to enjoy hunting and the good food it brought.
I'm pretty messed up physically now and don't hunt anymore, but I sure do still love shooting.
Your question about outlawing guns, is one that I have put in considerable time pondering.
I am a law abiding citizen and if guns were outlawed I would obey the law, but outlawing guns because of the actions of crazy and criminal minds is not the answer.
I firmly believe that if you outlaw guns, then only the cops and the criminals will have guns.
That makes me very nervous!
If you look around the world to the countries that have anti gun legislation, you will see that criminals are always able to obtain firearms!
The second part of your queerie was what was as people should be more focused on.
People who flip and go on a killing spree, have given signs about their potential for violence years before they do something so horrible.
You look at who they are and what has happened to them their whole life, and the writing on the wall was obvious.
These are kids who were bullied and picked on, and ostrecised their entire life.
The kids around them make matters even worse by isolating him or her and joining in the name calling and belittleing the person.
Parents all jump up in protest when it is their kid that is getting bullied, but if their kid is doing the bullying, they actually take their childs side!
I have personally seen parents pat their kids on the back, agreeing with them by saying, " your right , that kid is wierd!"
It only takes a man and woman to have a child, but it takes a community to raise that child!
I don't know who I quoted there, but it rings of truth. We are all our brothers keepers, and it is partly our fault when we see a kid committ a mass murder.
Most often it is our behavior that has driven someone to the point of going beserk!
Great posting!
Keep up the deep thoughts and hard questions.

Love & Peace,
jwcj
