I was recently reading articles about the Ark of the Covenant. The article talk about
the numerous people killed by touching or being near the Ark. Also, the Philistines
had such a horrible experience with it they gave it back to the Israelites. Clearly,
this thing was awful, unless you knew how to handle it. When the Jews were conquered,
it is speculated that the Ark was carried off, destroyed, or hidden by the priests. First,
since there is no record of the Ark, it probably was not carried off. Second, being hidden
by the priest is possible, however: 1) it has never been found and 2) since God's voice
was heard from it, wouldn't people go to visit it??? so, 3) they would probably have been
caught at some point making their visit to the Ark. Most likely, it was found, but being
dangerous, it was probably stoned at a distance until reduced to rubble. Then, when
the pilferers felt safe, they probably approached to collect the valuable gold fragments.
I think it was probably destroyed because it was too dangerous to keep intact and too
dangerous to leave in enemy hands, yet, the gold was valuable.
