It was the State championship football game.. the two teams, McNary of Salem and Corvallis... had had stellar unbeaten seasons. Longtime observers ranked them among Oregon's greatest. Everyone expected a great game..
And right from the kickoff it was apparent this game was special. the defenses were brilliant.. slashing tackles, super corner play.. but the offenses were even better. Tremendous broken field running, great fingertip catches, 50 yard bombs.. in spite of the magnificent defenses the score kept climbing.. and going back and forth.. 24-20.. 30-27.. 40-40.. finally, with the game tied at 54-54 and just seconds left, a McNary player kicked a 51 yard field goal..only 2 yards from the State record.. and the greatest game in Oregon history came to an end.. people came pouring out of the stands in ecstasy.. to suddenly be stopped in their tracks.
Because every single player on both teams had fallen to their knees and had their helmets off and head bowed. and 20,000 screaming fans were suddenly silent...
Asked about it afterwords the star of the game said simply
"we had to thank God for letting us play in a game like that."
and you think you can prevent prayer in school by legislation?
